I seriously doubt Russia fears a NATO invasion in 2022 but you have to look at the history of Russia to understand why they value buffer zones and would prefer Ukraine be under their sphere of influence. Russia has been invaded multiple times in its history starting with the Mongols, The French under Napoleon, The Japanese, and the Nazis that I can remember. Not to mention that Ukraine is more than just a buffer zone...among other things they are the 4th largest producer of corn and wheat in the world. There is zero doubt that Putin misses the old USSR borders. Bottom line Putin is playing the long game and knows we will let him invade Ukraine and won't stop him. They can suffer through any short term sanctions the US might apply...there are plenty of other countries they can do business with.
Russia also has huge currency reserves.
The US sanctions regime has made Russia more self- sufficient rather than more tractable to the US.

Aint no invasion gonna happen. Ukraine is currently a failed state and about to default on their loans. Poorest country in Europe. Why would anyone want to take over and support this hole?
Here are the realistic scenarion:
1) nothing happens and the propaganda war from both sides goes on to next year
2) ukraine attacks Donbas. Russia is forced to defend their 3 million civilians via air and missile campaigns. Ukraine army gets obliterated
3) a limited s ikg/missile battle between both sides breaks out.
4) germany, italy and france further serious security discussions w Russia. NATO and US further isolated.
Regardless there will be no russian boots on ukranian soil. All this invasion talk is propaganda for internal US consumption.
