Find a new home for Keldon before he gets an extension.
Brown & Tatum average significantly more assists per game than KJ & McDermott, so I doubt that'll be an issue.
Find a new home for Keldon before he gets an extension.
I agree. Even with Dejounte, White and Poeltl the defense would suffer for keldon and McDermott.
I don't want to see keldon get a 4/70 or 4/80, or worse when he's not even the equal of White.
I could honestly see the Spurs trade Murray next season. There doesn’t seem a way to build a compe ive team around him anytime soon, so they might just sell high for a 2023 pick
I'm totally on the opposite side
Imo you can't have a better trade for a role player like White who's 27 now. A Pick , a swap, some flexibility ( you don't talk about this part), a guy like Richardson who's not that bad and a kind of project with Langford.
One thing i don't agree is that it's not a choice between Lonnie and Derrick, both could have been traded. Spurs choose Primo and Vasell over White and i think it's a good idea.
My last point is to analyze this trade now, not with the past of the franchise. They could have done a better job before, everybody agree but it still a good trade imo.
Still i understand your point of view objective.
White was a good defender, but never had the ability to be a shooting guard. After all, isn't a SG supposed to be aggressive in shooting and have a decent 3pt shot. White was a career 34% 3 pt shooter and didn't show signs of improving. (Ref: Keldon Johnson improvement). In fact, there seemed to be a lot of games where he was back to being shy about taking the 3pt shot when he was open and could have. Once DJM won the PG spot, White became expendable because he never developed as an adequate SG. So thanks, Derrick, for what you gave us and I hope Boston is the right spot for ya.
That SG spot is now officially open for one of the other guards to take over. The compe ion between Primo and Vassell should be a highlight going down the rest of the schedule. I wonder if Vassell has enough aggressiveness to be the SG. And TBH his 3pt shooting percentage isn't any better than White for this year.
I actually think Primo is a better passer than Vassell at this point. If he loses that rookie shyness and starts to look for his shot more, we'll see if he really is the sharpshooter we drafted. His shooting percentages aren't very good TBH, but then he IS a rookie and hasn't had the ball put into his hands to win the SG spot. He could blossom with more time on court and the dose of confidence he could get from playing for the job this year.
Maybe they could not have gotten any better pick wise, fair enough.
But I think about player quality. If they had traded White and a first for John Collins, I would have been annoyed that they didn't try to sign the tender and have both, but at least it would have been arguably a better player who was definitely at a position of need.
I think White is good enough to be a starter on a le team, or at least a 6th man, and pull his own weight. And that's hard to get.
Richardson ain't it. Romeo ain't it. And the pick could be, but could also fall short of White's level like Walker, keldon, Samanic, Anderson, and now Romeo when we're talking picks 14-30. Even Vassell isn't there yet. The odds are not in the Spurs favor.
Add in that he wasn't terribly overpaid, he wasn't an underwater contract, and he was a low maintenance player, on a locked in for years. Not having to wonder if he wanted out for a bigger market or hotter club scene, he was fine where he was.
He was a good piece on a fair deal and I just think it's hard to step back from players like that, they don't grow on trees, look at Lonnie and Luka.
Very much so. Soggy trash with fecal matter on it...
I dont get all this White love from people. Only consistent things he ever did is take charges, run around in the paint an pick up his dribble under the basket, and run into the paint and flop into the defense an lose his footing looking like he traveled. His decision making was certified booty crumbs, an you damn sure couldn't count on his 3 ball. Set the B.S. guys. He looked like a special needs kid with that big ass head, then had the nerve to never do nuttin with that Whigga hair of his. Braid that nicca!!
Thats what I meant. I should have clarified - trading the picks isn’t going to be enough. But the Spurs have enough other assets (and probably without Murray) to move up if they REALLY wanted to.
He is 6’5. He can defend bigger wings and some 4’s but I don’t see him getting much burn at the 4 if he becomes a full time rotation player.
Memphis is a testament that you need to draft an all-star player to get a chance to even get into the playoffs in the West.
DJM is an all-star, but he's a borderline guy that is more like a role player with good stats than a dominant player.
I thought KJ would get to the next level this year but it hasn't happened other that having a higher % 3 point shot.
What the Spurs have are very good role players but not anyone who can take over games. It's just not good enough to win against Western teams that all have legitimate go to players.
So Spurs have no choice but to gamble on picks and players who can jump out of the gym.
A player like Danny Green thrived in the Spurs with a lot less basketball skills than this guy. I think he could be yet another decent role player for the Spurs.
White's peak was the dunk in the Utah series.. great trade.
Correction, Denver series.......
This. That series made everyone believe White had his coming out party...but then injuries, passive play, and crazy rotations seemed to derail him.
If we had the Derrick White from that series, I'd say he is definitely a keeper and one to build around. Unfortunately, that White only seemed to show up from time to time.
I always remember the Spurs story video on him, where his HS coach said that it took him awhile but eventually the team was better when they put the ball in Derricks hands, and that every coach along the way figured it out. All except one, that is. Boston has been needing a true PG for a while, and Derrick will do well there.
This was a solid trade for White. Spurs needed to move on. Nobody was going to give up a top 10 pick for the guy. I understand people liked Derrick as did I... probably the most likable guy on the team the past few years so I get why some people are acting upset, but the Spurs had been fielding calls on him for sometime now. They knew what his value was throughout the league.
I wonder if the HEB commercials will be running tonight?
white had become very sloppy with the ball as of late, often even dribbling the ball of his own feet, or just taking the ball right into the heart of the defense and having the ball swiped clean from him. he was also getting pretty sloppy with some of his passes.
all we do is play 4 guard line ups, the only PF is KBD. We played Vassell at Center once, so Romeo at the 3 or 4 can happen
Good luck White, solid trade anyway you see it
If anything, it's Keldon who has shown signs of being shy about taking threes. White lead the team with 5.3 3pt attempts per game in 30.3 minutes while Keldon has averaged 4.4 Attempts in 31.1 minutes. I get the reason for trading White, but if anything, Keldon is more frustrating to watch for me because he so frequently passes up threes, despite having the best possible success percentage-wise this year. Watching the Spurs this year, I've become convinced that there should be a new statistical category called "Passed Up Threes." I have a feeling this year's Spurs would be among the league leaders.
I’m curious to see how they look at Josh and Romeo. I mean, similar 3/D players, no? Going to be hard to fit them all in. Given that, Lonnie’s agent is probably trying to get him off the team, so to speak.
