I'm playing it on an old Samsung 1080p screen. I've been waiting for HDMI 2.1 TVs to become more widely available before nabbing a 4K HDR-10 120Hz TV like I have at the office.
Now I'm told the company will happily supply me one for home, but I haven't gotten it yet.
It absolutely can, we're doing either 1600p/60 or 1440p/60 in at least 5 different games. Ratchet uses TAAU as well and has none of these problems. TAAU is barely 0.5 msec. There's actually a newer upscaler on UE5, TSR, that's more expensive (~2 msec), you can see it in the matrix demo, but TAAU is also there.
Just to clarify, Horizon doesn't use UE, it uses Decima, Guerilla's own engine.
Sorry, I meant for how complicated the game world seems to be in Forbidden West. Seems like a lot more foliage and than your typical AAA game that could make 1440p60 problematic.
Do you find the performance mode acceptable on 1080p? I still see the aliasing and oversharpening when I put my monitor in 1080p, but the blurring going to lower resolution makes it much less noticeable. Ugh makes me wish this monitor had some of the noise reduction and interpolation you see on TVs. I always turn that off to bring down input lag, but I wonder how many of the people who think this looks fine on 4k on performance mode are using those features of their TVs instead of game modes.
That's a good question and depends on a number of things. Not familiar enough with Decima to answer that. Also, Days Gone used checkerboard in 4k, and nobody complained, but I'm curious to know if all that tiny detail actually is part of the problem here. Looks like a lot of the temporal instability comes from foliage, which are thin, small details.
Also wondering if an FXAA pass afterwards would help, but the problem with that is you have to do it after the checkerboard resolve, and that's bandwidth intensive. On the other hand, it would help some with that oversharpening people seem to be complaining about. Will be interesting to see what the fix looks like.
I mean, I'm playing the game and enjoying it. That said, this is a game that makes me want to have the 4K HDR TV though, I do feel I'm losing out in a lot of lush detail.
If you're playing performance mode, you don't want 4k HDR. Looks like total . You're missing out on a lot of shimmer and noise. Game legitimately looks less ty if I put my PS5 in 1080p mode. I think I might try to get this refunded and buy it again in six months for $30 when they have fixed performance mode after seeing Jon Linneman from Digital Foundry say he expects it wouldn't be a quick thing for Guerilla to fix.
It looks pretty nice in 4k30 mode other than some lighting on vegetation changing when you move the camera. But performance mode is a show on 4k.
Ugh 2022 is off to a dog start with Dying Light 2 unfinished and Horizon Forbidden West's performance mode legitimately being the ugliest thing I have ever played on my PS5. Now I'm just half expecting Elden Ring to be a piece of to complete the trilogy of suckage from what was supposed to be the most exciting month in gaming in years.
found the Cyberhands 2177 easter egg in DL2 which is basically the mantis blades. Pretty neat
Encountered my first bug in Horizon.
fps dropped to probably the 10s while out in the world doing contracts. Quitting the game fixes the issue but holy . You’d think the game would crash you out but it painfully lets you play it in such condition.

hmm, if the TV i'm using doesnt have HDMI 2.1... is there no good reason to use the 2.1 cable that comes with my PS5?
reason i ask is i already have all my wiring (including my HDMI 2.0 from my PS4) hidden through a cable runner which is going to be a to add a new cable to. if theres no point to it, i can just use the old cable and not have to go through the hassle
Depends how good of a cable and how long of a run you have. HDMI cable quality pretty much doesn't matter for 1080p 60 fs unless you're doing a long run but whole different story for 4k. Do you know the bandwidth of your current cable? 18Gbps is enough for 4k60. Think it's probably enough for 1080p120 also, but not quite sure there.
my tv is 4k. its a cheapass one from walmart though
its whatever hdmi cable came with the 1TB ps4. since it wasnt the pro, it might not be as good a cable as that one, though
if push comes to shove i can redo the cables and just use the 2.1 that comes with the PS5. just didnt know if it would serve any purpose if my TV doesnt really pick up the 2.1. conceivably would have better bandwidth than my current cable but i dont know the specs on it
might be worth just redoing my wire setup. im probably going to have to yank the cable runner off the wall and just reinstall another one. theoretically the piece facing out should be able to slide off, but since i have it making tight turns along my angled wall, i have just about zero slack to try to actually slide the pieces. and no chance i can just try to push a wire through. would be like pushing a string
4K60 should be ok with the wire you have (HDMI 2.0).
The reasons I want HDMI 2.1 support is for 120hz mode (testing 4k/40, which is becoming the new "cinematic mode" in 120hz displays), and VRR which is coming.
The HDMI cable that came with the PS4 Pro is 18Gbps which is what you need for 4k60. The HDMI cable that came with the original PS4 is 10.2Gbps which can't do 4k60, I think it can only do 4k24. Haven't managed to find out which one came with the PS4 Slim though. Since the Slim can only output at 1080p or lower it wouldn't surprise me if they only included the 10.2Gbps HDMI cable that was in the original PS4.my tv is 4k. its a cheapass one from walmart though

Out of curiosity, what makes a HDMI 2.1 cable? I use a 12' Rocketfish 8k cable that says its HDMI 2.1, but I can't really recall much of a difference between it and my older cables.
I thought there is no such thing as an HDMI 2.0 cable. I haven't found anything that says the PS4 Slim comes with an 18Gbps HDMI cable, only that the PS4 Pro does.
It needs to provide 48Gbps of bandwidth, eg enough for 4k at 120Hz. Most HDMI cables today are 18Gbps, enough for 4k at 60 Hz.
hm. arite then its probably just worth using the better cable then, even if i'm not getting the "2.1" out of it

Ouch, Best Buy is a price gouging bas when it comes to cables and other accessories. If you can make the run in 10 feet you could just get an amazonbasics 48Gbps HDMI cable for $11.63 and if you can make the run in 6 feet it's $8.

I didn't even think of 4k40, was wondering why you were so hung up on 4k120 when even RTX 3090 couldn't pull that off much less PS5. But 4k40 would be really nice to have and I hope more PS5 games support it in the future even if my 60Hz panel can't make use of it.
Speaking of VRR, is there any chance in PS5 will support FreeSync? Or are they only going to support HDMI 2.1 VRR? XBox supporting FreeSync pretty much ensures the Series X is going to be my main console for multiplatform games later in the gen when you see fewer games locking to 60 fps since 45-55 fps still looks awesome with FreeSync.
