The US has never used Ukraine as a military base. It's not a NATO country and doesn't allow US troops to be stationed there.

Republicans supported and defended the War in Iraq long after it became clear how much of an abortion it was, but they get ing irate when the US takes steps to support a sovereign country getting invaded in an unprovoked war.

I don't know the overall conservative opinion on this war, and it will be interesting to see polls, but being that Ukraine is a majority Christian country and Russia still has the Soviet era stain of being anti-religion, my guess is sympathies within most churches are aligning with Ukraine. Which is probably why you're seeing most GOP leaders, particularly those who brand themselves as Christians, taking their first anti-Putin stances in the past 10 years or so.
