Internet Backbone Giant Lumen Cuts Service To Russia

Lumen Technologies, an American company that operates one of the largest Internet backbones and carries a significant percentage of the world's Internet traffic, said today it will stop routing traffic for organizations based in Russia. KrebsOnSecurity reports: Lumen's decision comes just days after a similar exit by backbone provider Cogent, and amid a news media crackdown in Russia that has already left millions of Russians in the dark about what is really going on with their president's war in Ukraine. Monroe, La. based Lumen (formerly CenturyLink) initially said it would halt all new business with organizations based in Russia, leaving open the possibility of continuing to serve existing clients there. But on Tuesday the company said it could no longer justify that stance.

"Life has taken a turn in Russia and Lumen is unable to continue to operate in this market," Lumen said in a published statement. "The business services we provide are extremely small and very limited as is our physical presence. However, we are taking steps to immediately stop business in the region." "We decided to disconnect the network due to increased security risk inside Russia," the statement continues. "We have not yet experienced network disruptions but given the increasingly uncertain environment and the heightened risk of state action, we took this move to ensure the security of our and our customers' networks, as well as the ongoing integrity of the global Internet." According to Internet infrastructure monitoring firm Kentik, Lumen is the top international transit provider to Russia, with customers including Russian telecom giants Rostelecom and TTK, as well as all three major mobile operators (MTS, Megafon and VEON).

How Russia's Airline Industry Was Pushed To the Brink in a Week

Banned from swaths of the world's skies, denied access to vital spare parts, stripped of insurance and battling to keep hold of planes, Russia's aviation industry has in the space of a week been plunged into its gravest crisis in decades [Editor's note: the link may be paywalled].

From a report: Western governments have unleashed waves of sanctions since Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine late last month, but few have delivered such a visible punch as those targeted at an industry that accounted for 6 per cent of the world's airline capacity last year. Flag carrier Aeroflot, which took delivery of its first western aircraft from Airbus when Boris Yeltsin was in the Kremlin, on Saturday announced it would stop all international flights other than to Belarus. S7, Russia's second-largest airline, has also scrapped flights outside domestic airspace. The industry's mushrooming crisis is "unprecedented, unpredictable and unforecastable," said Max Kingsley-Jones of Ascend by Cirium, the aviation consultancy. With no clarity on how long the sanctions from US and EU authorities will remain in place, experts warned that in a worst-case scenario Russian domestic carriers' schedules would shrink to levels not seen in three decades.

Russia uses famous kid in bizarre new attempt to lie to its own people

In an attempt to justify his war in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin is now trying to lie to the Russian people by putting famous people and child stars in his propaganda.

The Russian Ministry of Education - or, as they refer to it, "the Ministry of Enlightenment" - produced a truly bizarre 30-minute "educational" video en led A Lesson About World Peace that features Sofia Khomenko, a 12-year-old singer who rose to fame in the country back in 2017 after she sang about her love of Russia.

As clipped up by The Telegraph, the young girl delivers a to-camera piece alongside Denis Polunchukov (the ministry's main presenter) as the pair attempt to tell the truth about Ukraine according to the Kremlin. There is absolutely no mention of war.

Honing in on the subject of misinformation, which has been a problem since the Russian invasion began, Polunchukov says that while people will have seen lots of distressing images from the situation in Ukraine, he insists that "these are from other conflicts - some are even from computer games".

However, neither of the propaganda pawns reference the very real stories of numerous deaths following the capture of Kherson, the bombing of a TV tower and causing fires at nuclear plants.

He goes on to say that people must be careful about verifying things they've seen on social media and while this would be sensible advice for anyone, there is plenty of verified stories and footage from inside Ukraine causing concern across the globe right now.

As if the Russian Ministry of Education's attempt to brainwash children wasn't enough, it also being reported that news outlets such as the BBC are being blocked by the nation's government in an attempt to censor coverage.

Clearly nobody cares how Putler feels, that's why they're inundating Ukraine with weapons to kill Ruskies.

Planes are just a bit more complicated than that though, as they need places to land and take off, change callsigns, etc.

Putler trying to get the Rusky MAGA vote...

Russia increases censorship with new law: 15 years in jail for calling Ukraine invasion a 'war'

“There’s been crackdowns on civil society and on the press for the past 10 years, really, and in the last year, it’s really picked up," Schwartz said. "So in some ways, the trend was really moving in this direction. But I did not expect that there could be such a total crackdown on independent press in Russia.”

Putin's law aims to further secure the support of rural, less educated and patriotic Russians, said Jonathan Aronson, a professor of international communication and relations at the University of Southern California.

“They're trying to keep as many of their folks from getting accurate information about what they're doing as possible,” Aronson told USA TODAY. “The elites are still going to be able to get that information.”

A recent Russian study surveying 2,000 people found that 58.8% of respondents supported Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Half of those who didn’t support the invasion had graduated from a university, while a third had some form of higher education.

Its getting harder and harder to distinguish between truth and fiction in our modern avalanche of information. As for Ukraine I certainly don't trust the normal news channels to be distributing accurate info. ? Some of what Hater has posted could very well be true especially the part of Ukraine negotiating with Russia to recognize Crimea, par ion existing Ukraine to recognize two new states (maybe after a sham election like Crimea) and never join NATO.

According to the journalist Ilya Lozovsky's English translation of Rustamova's Tuesday report, officials and members of parliament she spoke with said they were increasingly worried about how Putin was handling the war.

"In reality, the at ude toward the war within the corridors of power is ambiguous," Rustamova wrote, according to Lozovsky, whose translation she shared on Twitter and reposted in her Substack newsletter. "I came to this conclusion after speaking with several members of parliament and officials at various levels. Many of them are discouraged, frightened, and are making apocalyptic forecasts."

Rustamova recently fled the country and previously worked for the BBC Russian Service — which has since been suspended by the London-based network — as well as Meduza and the RBC, an investigative outlet that experienced a mass resignation in 2016.

"No one is rejoicing," a source described as "close to the Kremlin" told Rustamova, according to Lozovsky's translation. "Many understand that this is a mistake, but in the course of doing their duty they come up with explanations in order to somehow come to terms with it."

"Some officials aren't associating themselves with what's happening at all, viewing Putin's decision as a historical choice over which they have no influence, and the meaning of which no one will understand for a some time to come," Rustamova wrote.

Another person granted anonymity said Kremlin officials were "carefully enunciating the word cluster " when describing the invasion.

Rustamova wrote that every source she talked to believed Putin wouldn't follow through on invading Ukraine and was instead looking to gain leverage for concessions, such as declaring Donetsk and Luhansk "people's republics."

Ukraine says it successfully attacked Russian vehicles in Kyiv thanks to a Telegram tip

Ukrainian forces successfully attacked Russian vehicles in the capital city of Kyiv thanks to a public tip made through the encrypted messaging app Telegram, Ukraine's top law-enforcement agency said on Tuesday.

The Security Service of Ukraine said in a tweet that it was able to effectively target Russian convoys near Kyiv because of messages sent to an official Telegram bot account called "STOP Russian War."

"Your messages about the movement of the enemy through the official chatbot … bring new trophies every day," the government agency tweeted.

"This time we received the coordinates of enemy vehicles marked 'V' in Kyiv region," it added.
OSINT is a for slow moving formations this time around. Cell phones in the hands of civilians can tag things for strikes like this.

Putin ain't gonna touch us. He doesn't have to, he'll hit Poland in our stead, and hit 'em hard. And since we haven't went first since Nagasaki, Putin is comfortable with that assurance. That's an ironclad guarantee.

No Fly Zone indeed. State run media CNN pisses/moans about Ukr needing the NFZ...but then after the 3 minute /beg they finish the segment, "just grateful that Russia still does not have superiority in the air."

Yeah, I'll just bet they don't.

    tee, hee.
