    SARS-CoV-2 s up your immune system. A wide array of new onset autoantibodies have been found in patients with severe cases.

    Autoantibodies are identified in approximately 50% of patients but in less than 15% of healthy controls. When present, autoantibodies largely target autoantigens associated with rare disorders such as myositis, systemic sclerosis and overlap syndromes. A subset of autoantibodies targeting traditional autoantigens or cytokines develop de novo following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Autoantibodies track with longitudinal development of IgG antibodies recognizing SARS-CoV-2 structural proteins and a subset of non-structural proteins, but not proteins from influenza, seasonal coronaviruses or other pathogenic viruses. We conclude that SARS-CoV-2 causes development of new-onset IgG autoantibodies in a significant proportion of hospitalized COVID-19 patients and are positively correlated with immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 proteins

    US Sewer Data and Surges Abroad Should Remind Us the Pandemic Isn’t Over

    The numbers are inching up, again. “A wastewater network that monitors for Covid-19 trends is warning that cases are once again rising in many parts of the U.S.,

    “More than a third of the CDC’s wastewater sample sites across the U.S. showed rising Covid-19 trends in the period ending March 1 to March 10, though reported cases have stayed near a recent low.”

    Scientists have been watching the BA.2 subvariant with growing levels of concern;

    it is already making a strong showing in China and parts of Europe.

    It is entirely possible BA.2 is already present here in the U.S., and is at least partially responsible for the rise in cases across the country.

    The news may tell you we’re returning to “normalcy,” but 8,000 dead a week tells a different story;

    if this uptick continues, it runs the risk of taxing our already-battered health care infrastructure if/when BA.2
    does come knocking.

    =====================

    Deaths

    The current 7-day moving average of new deaths (1,180) has decreased 25.0% compared with the previous 7-day moving average (1,572).

    As of March 9, 2022, a total of 961,620 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in the United States.

    China's vaccine is crappy and HK hasn't been very good at getting older folks vaxxed. Downside perhaps of successfully containing COVID so far. Illusion of control. BA.2 is the most infectious variant we've seen yet, containment might not work this time in China. It's already out of control in HK.

    Disruption to the supply chain is already happening, Shenzhen is locked down, Foxconn is temporarily closed for business.

    Eric Feigl Ding is too enthusiastic in general about COVID dangers, but I assume since he's talking about China in this case, dedicated COVID deniers/minimizers/herd death cheerleaders on this board will approve.

    Brandon's CYA. It's the culmination of a year of inept public health messaging and cynical pandering to the "back to normal" narrative.

    tl;dr

    we're unprepared for the next e, the US Congress cut the money off and Brandon's waving the white flag.

    Bonkers

    No more PPE in research labs?

    Verboten to request that others wear name tags, matching t-shirts or funny hats to meetings on campus?

    So much for personal choice.

    Covid victims with serious long-covid disabilities having a hard time proving it, cannot work, cannot obtain disability payment.

    Covid-ed into long term poverty

    Also, covid brain damage will produce Ms of early-onset dementia in the next decades.

    30K+ covid dead/month STILL, both parties block any more funds for pandemic mitigation, with USA gonna be hit with an inevitable e now hitting Europe.
