    Interesting it got leaked.

    10,000+16,000 + ??? deserted/captured = 26,000+ or more than 10% of their total troops counts.

That puts their combat units at the edge of being completely exhausted.

The war sucks but all in all I prefer to see Russia deplete its resources basically bombing itself than for the US to commit to another long, drawn out conflict with no resolution.

It only looks embarrassing because people think a war can be won video game style. Russia throws bodies at it just like WWII. They will win by attrition, even if the narrative minded folks want to say otherwise. You won't see a Ukrainian waving their flag at the Kremlin. Unlike the US, Russia doesn't weep at every soldier's funeral.
"modern Russia is just like the USSR in WW2"

Russian generals have had to lead from the front because its amateur army can’t move otherwise.
“That is the mark of an undisciplined and unprofessional army that is poorly led and poorly trained, and to make up for it, [they] push the generals into the field,” said Foggo, the retired U.S. admiral. “They’re out there, and they’re kind of winging it. This is breaking down into an undisciplined rabble.
    https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/03/21...-dead-ukraine/

The average Russian soldier today has zero motivation compared to his ww2 counterpart, even less training. Given their equipment losses, any conscripts will be ill-motivated, untrained riflemen that will be going up against highly-motivated ukrainian civilians of roughly the same training level.

Numbers count for something, but there is no scenario under which Russia will achieve its goals. Their operations increasingly reek of desperation, and the disorganization of their army will get worse with attrition.

    Lavrov

“We will [never again] be under the slightest illusion that the West could be a reliable partner,” the Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has said. “We will do everything so as never, in any way, to be dependent on the West in those areas of our life which have a decisive significance for our people.”

Those words are bound to reverberate across the world, with dramatic implications for the West. As Wolfgang Münchau has warned: “For a central bank to freeze the accounts of another central bank is a really big deal… As a direct result of these decisions, we have turned the dollar and the euro, and everything that is denominated in those currencies, into de facto risky assets”. At the very least, it will inevitably push countries to diversify their reserves and increase their yuan holdings, in order to loosen the West’s grip on their economies and bolster their economic resilience and self-sufficiency. Even if it doesn’t push countries straight into Beijing’s arms, as is already happening with Russia, it will likely lead to the emergence of two increasingly insulated blocs: a US-dominated Western bloc and a China-dominated East-Eurasian one.

    West defaults

As a direct result of these decisions, we have turned the dollar and the euro, and everything that is denominated in those currencies, into de facto risky assets. The probability of default of a dollar or euro denominated asset can no longer be credibly put at zero. With a single decision, we have created a tail risk.

Of course, no credit rating agency in the world would ever acknowledge freezing central bank assets as a formal default. They will, of course, not downgrade the entire US economy to junk status. Nobody is going to pay them any fee income for that. Nor will freezing central bank assets ever trigger collateral default swaps, financial instruments that cons ute a form of default insurance.

So if this is not classified as a default in a legal sense, what kind of default is it then? Think of it as a default on money’s most important promise: that it allows its holders to engage in legal transactions. There are, of course, other ways for governments and central banks to debase money, through inflation for example. But we can hedge against inflation, whereas there is no hedge against the freezing of your accounts.

I hear you say: maybe this is a price worth paying to stop a dictator from waging war. Unfortunately, it won’t. Europe is still paying Putin some €800m each day for oil and gas.

As I argued last week, an oil and gas embargo is the sanction that would have made an impact in the short-term, severely constraining his ability to replenish military stock he is using up now. The west chose the central bank sanctions because they were least inconvenient in the short run. But we did so without even considering the long-term consequences.

We are resorting to the only problem-solving method we know: kicking the can down the road. Until we hit a brick wall.

We will see what happens. UKR has started more than one counter attack.

I was wondering when this was going to happen. RUS has lost enough for any hope of offensive to be lost, and will now be on the back foot defending against well-supplied, highly motivated counterattacks.

The civilian night vision goggles that are finding their way into UKR hands will make the night time rather nasty for RUS. They will not get sleep, have little food, and will run out of rifle ammo, because the supply trucks seem to be mostly tasked with artillery ammo.

Arty don't mean much when the infantry in front of them evaporate.

    Слава Україні!

Pe ion launched for maker of Vladimir Putin’s $13,000 jacket to denounce him
A pe ion has been launched calling for the maker of the jacket worn by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a rally in Moscow to denounce him and his invasion of Ukraine.

Mr Putin took the stage at the Luzhniki World Cup stadium in Moscow on Friday 18 March in a $13,000 [£10,200] Loro Piana puffer jacket. The rally was in commemoration of Russia’s 2014 invasion of Crimea.

Echo of Moscow radio correspondent Karine Orlova launched a change.org pe ion, saying that “Loro Piana should publicly denounce Vladimir Putin”.

“Anyone who likes anything Western is a national traitor, declared Putin and two days later appeared dressed in a $10K Loro Piana coat at a rally in Moscow promoting war in Ukraine. Putin has long been a fan of the brand – time to end this. Please, sign,” she tweeted on 19 March.

Russia is on par with China and the US in military might.
“I have seen paintball teams with more tactical sense than this.”

The video, which was originally published on Telegram, appears to show Russian troops dismounting from a column of vehicles while under fire. Contrary to how U.S. troops respond to an ambush, the soldiers in the clip take a very different approach. There is little, if any, return fire and few of the soldiers take up covered positions. If there’s a leader present, he doesn’t appear to be identifying the enemy’s location. And while it’s a short video, the Russian soldiers don’t seem to be in any hurry to move out and “destroy the enemy,” as U.S. forces might. In short, it’s a cluster .
The video starts with a number of troops in a lackadaisical retreat from a truck to an armored vehicle. At least a couple of people are in the prone position, aiming under one of the trucks, but there doesn’t appear to be anyone actually returning fire.

“That’s a goat rope,” said one Marine who served in Marine Forces Special Operations Command from 2006-2018.
“Just seeing how they’re handling their weapons, you know that nobody knows what they are doing,” said the MARSOC Marine. “If you are going to pull back from one vehicle to another, where is the base of fire? Where is the maneuver element?”

Going from a bad situation to an even worse one, this squad then finds itself bunched up and wedged between an armored vehicle and the guardrail on the side of the road. Granted, a firefight is a chaotic environment, but you don’t even need to have graduated from basic training to understand that it’s always better to spread out — or “maintain dispersion,” as every veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan was told countless times before and during their deployments.

That armored personnel carrier could be of some use, but it doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything. And given the number of anti-tank weapons flowing into Ukraine, having an entire squad huddle directly behind one might not be the best idea for cover and concealment.
