Can u explain then why rubles recovered to pre war value after news that Russia is selling in rubles?

I can explain. The central bank jacked up interest rates to 20% and the government installed capital controls (meaning, you can't protect your savings by buying, say, dollars or euros, thus reducing capital flight risk).

What that means is that unless Russia has an annual inflation rate bigger than 20%, your invested money (in Rubles) will retain it's value, at least in the internal economy (once you have to touch imports, that's a different story).

Russia already tried to say it'll pay also for their debts in Rubles, and was also rebuked. That's not how contracts work.

The only concern with not being Rubles is if that money falls within the sanctions, in which case those payments could be frozen, but Gazprom is not, at this time, part of the sanctions, AFAIK.

And there in lies the reason why Russia is adamant on transacting in Rubles, it's because they control the currency and can't be seized or frozen. The problem is that it takes two to tango, and pretty much no country want to transact in Rubles.

Several hundred Russian soldiers were forced to hastily withdraw from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine after suffering “acute radiation sickness” from contaminated soil, according to Ukrainian officials.

“Another batch of Russian irradiated terrorists who seized the Chernobyl zone was brought to the Belarusian Radiation Medicine Center in Gomel today,” Yaroslav Yemelianenko, who works for the Public Council at the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management, posted on Facebook. “There are rules for dealing with this territory.”

Russia didn't just sit around and did nothing, they've been imposing monetary controls since the sanctions came about. The ruble isn't working on a free market economy anymore.

If the sanctions are a nothingburger, why is Russia desperate to get payments in rubles, their stock market tanked and their economy shrinking?

There's a long history of capital controls (especially in South America), and they just don't last long.
