have you been to a synagogue? I can't think of any I've been to where security was lax. it would take something fairly serious and specific for a city-wide cancellation of services to happen.

to be sure, the structures aren't obviously hardened (tough windows, usually) but often there's a security checkpoint, and sometimes entry through a sentried door.
