Police say the 20 yr old shooter (Jonathan Douglas Sapirman) bought the rifle he used on March 8 in Greenwood and another rifle he bought on March 9 was found in a bathroom. He was also armed with a handgun.

Guns are seldom used for self defense or altruistic violence. They're mostly used for sport, suicide and violent crime. Any defense of gun rights emphasizing defense or good guys with guns is more or less bull , industry propaganda or political cant.
