Those fears were realized Thursday with the publication of a case report of monkeypox in a child in the Netherlands. it's not time to panic, but it is time to seek good information about a pathogen that has reached the stage of community transmission in the US. For the time being, containment has failed.
It's somewhat concerning that two years after a world-historical pandemic involving a novel pathogen, the CDC gets flat-footed by a foreseeable and supposedly planned for scenario, namely, the sudden emergence of a smallpox-like infection in the US.
I feel bad for all you "dudes" here.
