Obviously Kawhi is a "generational talent" but the dude can't play anymore...

And of course the right way to look at this is:

    Kawhi

    or

    Keldon
    Jak
    Bran
2025 Top 10 Protected FRP from CHI

Sure, the Kawhi who took Toronto to the 'chip would have been fun to watch with LMA that year.... but let's assume he patches things up with the Spurs and stays... where is that team now? Obviously LMA is still retired by this point... I'm not sure what the team looks like at this point. But... we might have two more 'chips if Zaza never happens.

Id ask ‘Keldon or Edwards’? Keldon had a great overall game but Anthony Edwards had a great second half. In the past three games I’d say Keldon-2 Edwards-1. With Keldon outplaying edwards in game 1 and 3 while Edwards took game 2.

Keldon's development trajectory has been unbelievable.

Have a look at this 2019 draft

    https://www.basketball-reference.com.../NBA_2019.html

A re-draft today, a mere 3 and a bit years later, would likely see Keldon go number 3 imo behind Morant and Zion.

With Zion being a ticking time bomb injury wise, Keldon could easily have the second best NBA career out of the entire draft.

^Garland may have a case for the number 3 spot ahead of Keldon, but I wouldn't do that if im the Spurs. I wouldn't trade Keldon for anyone in that draft other than Morant or Zion.

It's crazy how that Kawhi trade isn't looking that bad now. Poeltl and Keldon, both playing like borderline all-stars.
Plus the picks we got out of derozan

I'd say there's a pretty good case for Jordan Poole ahead of Keldon. After that, I'd put Keldon just ahead of Herro?

Edit: on second thought, nah. Keldon ahead of Poole.

Yeah Poole and Herro were the two guys who I thought were close to Keldon but for comparable talents/numbers give me the bigger 6'6' guy who can play 3/4 over the smaller 6'4-6'5 guys who are combo guards. Keldon isn't great defensively but Poole and Herro are both poor on that end.

Amazing how much changes in 4 years.
No way would we trade a Keldon for Kawhi now.
I might finally be getting over how Kawhi stabbed us in the back and that trade isn’t looking so terrible anymore.
The Spurs won a le with Nephew. How many stars have left their original teams without ever winning a le?
A completely healthy Nephew might be better- but isn't going to turn this team into a contender and his shelf life is short.

    Then there is this...

Keldon becoming a leader in the locker room that Kawhi never could be

If the question is, “Which player would you rather have on your team if your goal is to win a championship this year?” the answer is Kawhi. If the question is, “Which player would you rather build around for the next 5-10 years?” the answer is clearly Keldon.

Even before he blew his knee out, he can’t play well past the second round. He doesn’t get his days off. He’s no longer a centerpiece on a le contender.

I just hope the Spurs don't do something stupid like offer Mute Cancer a welcome back contract in 2025 when he's 35 and completely broken down and the big markets don't want him any more.

I don't think we have to worry about that. He'll likely retire rather than leave his comfy blanket in SoCal.

Uncle Dennis will still need money so he'll push him to keep playing until he's 40+ I'm guessing.

so in exchange for (so far) 4 seasons of kawhi (he only played three, missed one to injury), we got:

    poeltl
    keldon
3 years of derozan > 2025 protected first from chicago + thad youg (traded to raptors for Branham pick) + 2 second round picks

Right now? Keldon ... but he will probably get a day or two off by Pop after the beating he took last night.

even though toronto benefited greatly by getting their banner, they still did us a favor. the spurs medical staff saw a degenerative condition that uncle wanted to change the narrative on (nephew wasn't taken care of well by the spurs medical staff). now, the clippers can load manage him all they want but that knee (quad, actually) is always going to be a problem.

Kawhi is the better player, but Keldon is more fun to watch because he looks like he's happy to be here. I just trust that he will stick around if he's fairly paid. Kawhi wanted out as soon as he got his max contract.

Right, but Toronto would say they got one year of Kawhi and a le and cut loose DDR salary and mediocrity. So they got a good deal too. If we could guarantee a le by trading Poeltl, Keldon, and draft picks, we'd do it. les are hard to get, even if it is just one le.

I’m not willing to say the Spurs won that trade just yet.
Toronto got a championship and that’s part of the equation.
I’m sure the Raptors would do it all over again

The Raptors didn't just get a tainted championship, they got undeserved reputations and long-term job security out of it.

The Spurs never "win the trade" unless Johnson becomes a significant part of winning a championship here, which is obviously beyond highly unlikely.

And of course the right way to look at this is:

This is revisionist history and an attempt to reverse engineer things while the latter part is irrelevant.

they still did us a favor.

But you do the latter all the time.

It's literally the results of the trade. I get it, you thought the Spurs should have done better and that prevents you from acknowledging the long-term outcome of the trade. Still doesn't change the facts though.

Always take the younger guy when it's close enough to ask. Whether KJ ever reaches the peak that Kawhi did is much more doubtful.

Wouldn't be surprised if Kawhi just retired. He's not getting any younger. The only thing getting better about him is his salary. Don't know how much longer the Clips keep paying his salary without getting that much in return. Your reputation doesn't take you very far in the playoffs as the clippers have already found out. Who knows with him. He's an odd character.
