I agree with Ice. I'd like to see this question answered, if anyone has an idea about if it will affect his athleticism. Thanks.
Thanks for also asking the question as I was quite devastated for him when it happened. I was so excited to see him play, but devastated to see this setback after it was announced what the injury was.

When it comes to knee injuries, a torn MCL is regarded as relatively minor. ACL, LCL and PCL tears would all be worse. Cartilage/meniscus damage is worse. Patella or patellar tendon damage is worse. A torn MCL is pretty bad but it usually doesn't require surgery and is rarely career threatening or career altering. Athletes are basically cleared to play once the stability of the knee is sufficient and pain has subsided. You can even play through a torn MCL (IIRC, Tom Brady and Dwight Howard played through torn MCLs) if you wear a brace and can deal with the pain.

With the way Wesley went down, an MCL injury is one of the better outcomes. Still bad and sometimes it can linger but far from the worse. The Spurs might sit Wesley for the rest of the season since he's so young and so dependant on his elite athleticism just to play it safe -- but chances are he'll be back at some point in January.
Thanks a lot for the very detailed explanation. I really wish it didn't happen as he was already looking good. I hope he comes back 100% this season and plays. I can't remember the play, but was there direct contact that led to the injury, or did it happen on it's own?

Contact injury. He took Gobert's(i think) knee to the side of his knee and it hyper extended.

He hyperextended it, went back down the floor for defense, but immediately asked out of the game, and hobbled straight down the middle of the court into the tunnel on his way to the locker room.

Thanks. I am guessing it's always better if it was due to contact rather than it happening on it's own, right? I recall Kawhi's ACL happening without any contact.

Right, thanks for description. I still feel bad for the kid. I hope he is back strong this season. I'd hate to see all his hard work and momentum he had going to waste over this injury this season . Get well soon, Blake.

He got hit right when he planted so he's pretty lucky it wasn't worse.

Darn, could have been a lot worse. Crappy freak injury from the looks of it. Like you guys said, lucky it wasn't worse. I am happy it wasn't worse looking at that.

So hearing official diagnosis is sprained MCL instead of a torn MCL. Might not be a huge difference but that's better and could be why Spurs didn't sign another PG

Don't know. Unless I've missed it, I haven't seen a timetable given by the Spurs at all yet. I think two months was if it was torn but I'm not sure.

I don't mind him returning later rather than sooner but good to hear that it's only sprained and not torn, assuming the report is already official.
Usually, I think players having injury with a "torn" kinda affects them mentally so it affects their athleticism a bit. The fear of being injured again esp. in the same body and quite understandable. Not all players have the same mental capacity in regaining back their confidence coming from an injury.

A productive and long career is more important than getting into the all rookie team.
There is no need to force anything, and it is better to wait for a full recovery.

Just add on at least 2 weeks to however long it takes to recover at a minimum to the time Wesley is out.

    Nevermind. It's still tear.

Upon searching, a Grade 3 Sprain is aka as complete tear of ligament.

The biggest issue is one of his weak points was ability to finish at the rim with this it’s going to take awhile to get over the mental challenge of a possible re injury. Spurs will definitely hit the breaks with him when he comes back no need to force things the injury is a step back but hopefully just temporary

Sucks but could be worse. Hopefully he sits in with the coaches, practices his jump shot and other things he could benefit from working on, if able.

Yeah I was confused previously when my doctor told I got a sprain and then later got a tear. He later told me that in medical term a sprain in the ligament is a tear.

Blake Wesley said he’s started rehabbing after suffering a knee injury that threatens to keep him off the court until late December or possibly early January.

“It’s going good,” he said in the locker room before Friday’s win over Milwaukee.

“I’ve started jogging, lifting and getting my routine back," he added. "I’m on the court, not moving, but getting up shots and taking it day by day.”

The 25th overall selection of the 2022 NBA Draft says he's kept his spirits up through prayer and conversations with his parents, who are visiting San Antonio from South Bend, Ind.

Wesley said it was a “blessing” his injury didn’t require surgery.

“When it happened, I thought I was going to have to have surgery,” he said. “I’m glad that didn’t happen.”

Spurs should not rush him back. But his return will be greatly anticipated as Spurs are without true backup PG.

I was so excited when I saw him play that first game and seeing him do well. I wish him a super faster recovery and hope he's back sooner than later. I really want him to be healthy and play this season.
