As someone who follows the AFC religiously, this was absolutely predictable. I have no idea how Qatar won the Asian cup as host, but even looking at their domestic compe ions...their clubs can’t do anything against opposing Asian teams so the quality was never there.
if Ecuador continued playing, they would have won 5-0. They have no idea how to deal with the press.
they might get a draw with Senegal but it’s going to look ugly against Netherlands unless the Dutch decides it’s not worth it running the score..

the average Qatar makes about 350k a yea almost take home.
you expect them to care about football?
Qataris on average have 2-3 maids, make a decent amount of money etc..there is no way you can build a grass root for that.
on top of that, a lot of the Academy players are Iraqi, African, Yemenis..
even kids don’t care.

I think Messi can still play in the World Cup in 2026. He’s not overly reliant on his athleticism and can probably play deeper as an Attacking midfielder (he does this now to an extent)
