As bad as passing on Sengun was I would still rate passing on Haliburton a bigger screw up. Haliburton is turning into a franchise player and the best player of that draft. Just what the Spurs were trying to get with Primo. I am becoming more and more convinced that the Spurs aren't better than anyone else in assessing talent. They do seem to develop it better once they have it thus giving the illusion that they are better at assessing players.
Gonna keep beating this horse carcass. He wanted Sacramento. Vassell is very good too.

The only saving grace of the wasted Primo pick is how bad the rest of that draft was. The only really intriguing players who went after him are Trey Murphy (very solid), Herb Jones (great defender), Bones Hyland (microwave), and Sengun, and I'm not crazy about Sengun as a big who's cement-footed on D, can't shoot the 3, and turns it over a bunch. I probably like Santi Aldama from that same draft better than Sengun. Kispert as a gunner has potential as well, I suppose.

my first reaction to the primo pick was a state of shock because i was expecting to hear sengun's name and instead heard a name that i had nowhere on my list of possible picks. i wound up deferring to the spurs FO and figured they knew something about primo that other's didn't. of course, as it turns out, only primo knew something about himself that no one else did.
Well he did eventually share this information

It's pretty early, but it really is turning out to be a mediocre draft. I was watching the Keldon highlights and several times he went right by or shot over Sengun. He's a good piece and will put good numbers, but his defense is going to limit him.

The equivalent to the Primo bust is Phoenix whiffing entirely on Jalen Smith the year before when Vassel and Haliburton were there. Smith is looking at least promising in Indiana. Phoenix has a history of horrible high picks. Let's hope the Spurs get back on track.

From 2012 to 2017 PHX drafted or traded for:

    13 - Kendall Marshall
    5 - Alex Len
    4 - Dragan Bender
    8 - Marquese Chriss
    4 - Josh Jackson

    Yet they are a Contender
You just need to nail a few in close proximity

Still pissed we didn’t draft Sengun and even more so after what Primo pulled. SMH

i honestly think Sengun with all his athletic limitations on the right team could at least be a solid team defender and offensively the dude was nice before he even hit an NBA court.

Houston really needs to cut the far and get rid of Porter Jr. and a few of the other young chuckers on that roster as well as their coach. It’s sad seeing Jabari Smith and Sengun barely touch the ball on offense or when they do it’s usually at the end of the shot clock or in a bad position. They have talent on that squad but definitely need somebody with a solid vision to get them straight.

I dont think spurs fans realize how common high draft picks bust. Primo is still without hindsight the better player. You always take higher upside over “value“ in the lottery. Primo looked like a big guard with play making. Sengun is at best a career roleplayer. Playing for the rockets makes everyone look better than they are with the ball. Wake me up when sengun shoots the 3 enough to get houston off the floor.

Primo is being judged by the worse outcome , sengun inflated by empty stats.

if we had drafted sengun, he'd be getting roasted on ST.

All reasonable points...but at the end of the day, the Primo pick was a complete waste of a #12 pick. ANY other player in that range would have been better simply for the fact that they would still be playing with the team or, at the very least, be a trade asset.

The Primo pick was a draft failure of monumental proportions. Even worse than Samanic...and that's saying something. The fact those two were drafted just two years apart is definitely a black mark on Wright's resume.

If you have a chance to get Wemby, you take it and figure out the rest later.

    I’ll have what he’s having.

Yeah, I'm not crying over missing Sengun. Best case scenario with him is that he just keeps us in play-in purgatory. At least with Primo it was a shot at the fences. It turned out a whiff, but at least it didn't keep us stuck in play-in territory.

I like Sengun but it’s hard to not see him being a defensive liability throughout his career.

When you look at the team’s construction - specifically the youth, position and playing-style; Kai Jones looks like the player we should have picked.

So very raw but we supposedly have one of the greatest developmental/teaching staffs in all of basketball.

Henry Ruggs & Primo……. very eerie! Different sport/cir stance but same draft spot/jersey number.

Yeah, he is pretty much what he’s going to be. He’s undersized and not athletic. I’d rather take a big swing late in the lottery than draft a rotation level player.

I really wish the Spurs should have went after Kai Jones. This organization would have done well developing him.

whether the spurms draft sengun or not, will he get the playing minutes his enjoying on the rockets compared to if on the spurs even with a ty roster with roster spots up for grabs

how about teams who draft experience european players only to bury them on the bench....

Agreed, but I get both sides.

To this point, it's gone as expected: Primo looked like a replacement player and Sengun looks like Sabonis 2.0.

The latter probably doesn't have a place on a championship contender, but the team with the least talent in the league picking 12th probably shouldn't be overly concerned with that.

They actually should. Take the big swing with a late lottery pick. Drafting mid is the treadmill.

Relax, I was playing devil's advocate.

Keep in mind though, if their trajectories continue (let's even say Primo eventually graduates from replacement to rotation player), flaws and all, Sengun would have more trade value.

If it wasn't for his issues, Primo would probably be better than Sengun this day.
