The man largely responsible for bringing the Spurs to San Antonio has passed away at age 95.

RIP Red McCombs. Thanks for everything tbh.

Man, I just bought a truck from his dealership on Saturday. I asked about him and was told he wasn't doing too well, but I didn't expect it. What can you say, he left a large legacy in this city.

Actually met him at race at Churchill Downs several years ago, was huge into horse racing as an FYI and actually talked to him about the Spurs for a few minutes(Had on a Spurs hat lol) and he came across as a genuinely nice guy.

RIP and as others have said, appreciate what you did for this organization.

The man was a great Texan, San Antonian, sponsor and/or owner of so many enterprises that benefited the city and State as well as a super philanthropist. He started as a car salesman and grew into a hugely successful businessman. You can't replace a man like Red McCombs. RIP.

I thought it was Angelo Drossos who brought the Spurs to San Antonio.
Both- though I always got the feeling Drossos was more involved with how things ran,
McCombs sold off his share not long after they entered the NBA, but bought the team in the late 80s.
Made some really questionable decisions. That said he probably ensured it stayed in SA.

I read McCombs was going to back out but Drossos convinced him not to so it was mainly Drossos who is responsible for the Spurs being in San Antonio.

It's amazing how much better Drossos was as an owner than billionaire McCombs. Drossos went out and paid for the Spurs to get Artis Gilmore and Mike Mitc when they were struggling with the Lakers. Never got them over the hump but it was a legit effort to bring a le to San Antonio. McCombs was too cheap to get us Barkley and let a budding star in Strickland walk to be replaced with ty Del Negro and almost traded David Robinson because he didn't want to pay him. McCombs was the cheapest owner this team ever had despite being the only one that was ridiculously wealthy.

Why? Supposed to act like a bad person is a saint just because he died? His biggest legacy is trashing this nation's media and political discourse, not some car dealerships and a sports team.

I don't think the guy was a saint no, but this is on the main Spurs forum which is about basketball and he was a part of that so just don't think its the place for what you said.To each their own, but that's just me friend. You do you

Just how I met him pal, but nice job going back to my post just to try and score points. Not gonna get in a debate with an anonymous dude on an online forum over something like this. Again I don't think he was a saint either by any means, but was nice when I talked to him and appreciate what he did for the Spurs. Gonna leave it at that.

I think he's an asshole who left the world worse than it was when he came in. Neither of our posts had anything to do with the Spurs.
