There were only seven lottery picks in 1985.
Karl Malone was picked outside the lottery.

Primo is a good choice in this poll for being 12 and not really blossoming plus the fact Sengun was available regardless of how you rate Sen factoring in the scandal and knowing you'd have Sen right now instead of nothing to show for it at all.

But kinda feels like Primo while def kinda sucking on court was a bad pick more for the scandal and so in the more basketball sense I think Luka Samanic is the better choice for this poll. Luka sucked at basketball straight up.

At 19 he is early enough to expect more. Yeah Livio-Charles but at 28 you start to expect much less and lots of those late FRPs flop.

The other aspect about Luka is almost costing ourselves KJ not that KJ is that great but you pick Luka at 19, he sucks, and if that cost you someone like KJ it would've added insult to injury and even though it didn't happen the risk of it added to the debacle of Luka's selection.

TL;DR I feel like Luka Samanic is the perfect crossroads of high enough selection + ty player that showed nothing + better on the board you almost cost yourself

I remember people being pretty disappointed with Cadillac Anderson, but Primo has to be the pick. Primo didn’t bust because he couldn’t play basketball. He busted for walking his meat hog in front of unwilling eyes. He might be in the conversation as one of the worsts busts in league history. Len Bias is less ridiculous of a bust.

Alfrederick Hughes I’d say. Didn’t he get cut before his rookie season started?

It's Primo and its not even close.

He was drafted on character and is currently out of the league cause he can't keep his in his pants at work

I would say Primo based on purely objective measures
The highest pick who then played less than seasons worth of games.
However, several players before him have had rocky starts and don't look to have long term significant long term impact.

Played in the NBA, 1st rounders with most negative B-R career VORP:
-7.8 Greg Anderson (-1.1 as Spur)
-1.5 Dwayne Schintzius (-0.3 as Spur)
-1.3 Blake Wesley (but too early to not improve)
-1.2 Malaki Branham (same as Wesley)
-1.1 Lonnie Walker IV (-1.3 as Spur, so positive VORP as Laker)

Played in NBA, highest pick with negative B-R VORP
9 Jeremy Sochan (but too early to not improve)
    12 Joshua Primo
    14 Alfredrick Hughes
    15 Reggie Johnson
    18 Lonnie Walker IV

Highest draftee who didn't play in the NBA
    26 Nikola Milutinov
    28 Livio-Jean Charles
    41 Chris Carrawell
    44 Henry Williams
    49 Ryan Richards

    First rounders playing fewest games
37 Blake Wesley (expect not to be on this list next year)
43 Luka Samanac (may move off this list)
    52 Wiley Peck
    54 Joshua Primo
56 Jeremy Sochan (needs to be healthier)

Really? I don't remember that at all. Was a pretty productive player who was the last pick of the first round, so I don't remember any kind of huge expectations for him or anything.

I stand corrected, maybe I’m just remembering the general feeling around the Spurs after Ice but before the Admiral. The Spurs got him in the Mychal Thompson trade, who was past 30. Really looked like he was doing good until he was included in the Alvin Robertson-Terry mings trade. Did he get injured after that?

Is Lonnie Walker somehow not eligible? (Not that he would win, but it's insulting to him to be so recent and yet so overlooked.)

Too soon. It may take years before some realize how bad he was. Counting stats don’t tell that story.

    It's all relative
    Hughes was bad
Yeah Karl Malone was taken the pick before, but there were two players before Malone who barely played in the NBA.
Yeah Dumars and Terry Porter were taken after Hughes, a lot of mediocre players taken before.
You're going to whiff periodically on draft picks.

Primo probably the biggest given TO DATE multiple serviceable players taken after
Nothing like a Portland Trailblazer big man whiff

Lonnie Walker isn't really a bust, but there were a number of good players picked after him.

He still had a way better career than Alfredrick the Great though. His career highlight was running his Benz up the embankment on 281.
As far as busts go, it's Hughes by a mile in terms of worthlessness.

I don't think guys like Walker/Samanic/Anderson/etc can be considered busts when they were picked in the back half of the 1st round. The entire draft is a crapshoot after the first 10 picks or so most years anyway

And while they are not setting the world on fire, Walker and Anderson are still in the league and Samanic is hanging on by his fingernails.

A bit off topic, but most either became or looked to be in the process of becoming more or less as projected.

Too much emphasis on perceived "culture" fits and confidence in player development staff and not enough on analytics, which correctly forecasted many.
