It is not forbidden in Russia. Russians can still play the game.
After the start of the war on Ukraine, Russia has banned its citizens from accessing such online services as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as the sites of several Western media, including Helsingin Sanomat. Due to this, a large proportion of Russians are not aware of what is going on in Ukraine, for example.
The Russian state-controlled media are not telling the truth.
This sparked a crazy idea: Could we create a place in Counter-Strike, where the millions of young Russian men playing this first-person shooter game would be forced to face the terrors of the war in Ukraine?

It is weird. It really does not serve a purpose for Ukraine.
It was already demonstrated they could hit Moscow.

May 9 and other WW2 “celebrations” Russians hold will be muted if they know they are not safe anywhere. So not really a military strike. More of a political message possibly.

This is possibly setting the table for the counterattack.
Looks like the plan is most likely to cut Crimea off from Russia and then wear them down by not allowing material in.
Im not sure how this is done if Russia can still use their navy in Crimea. Anyways experts seem to think Russia will react by hurting civilians in Ukraine. Because militarily the Russians can’t react well against an Ukraine military unless battles like Bahkmut take place. And the Ukrainians will not purposely get bogged down offensively like Russia did in Bahkmut or they will lose.

Interesting. Perhaps this false flag operation is really just for domestic consumption in Russia. Perhaps they want to have a more legitimate seeming excuse for scaling back the WW2 celebrations when the real reason is because they've lost so much military gear in Ukraine. But it clearly wasn't the Kyiv Regime because this thing had no chance of actually doing any damage. It looks incredibly staged.
Yeah, the question is really which Russian did it. Putler himself, FSB, some internal resistance. Doubt we'll ever know.

Russia likely staged this attack in an attempt to bring the war home to a Russian domestic audience and set conditions for a wider societal mobilization. Several indicators suggest that the strike was internally conducted and purposefully staged. Russian authorities have recently taken steps to increase Russian domestic air defense capabilities, including within Moscow itself, and it is therefore extremely unlikely that two drones could have penetrated multiple layers of air defense and detonated or been shot down just over the heart of the Kremlin in a way that provided spectacular imagery caught nicely on camera. Geolocated imagery from January 2023 shows that Russian authorities have been placing Pantsir air defense systems near Moscow to create air defense circles around the city.[4] A strike that avoided detection and destruction by such air defense assets and succeeded in hitting as high-profile of a target as the Kremlin Senate Palace would be a significant embarrassment for Russia. The Kremlin’s immediate, coherent, and coordinated response to the incident suggests that the attack was internally prepared in such a way that its intended political effects outweigh its embarrassment. The Kremlin immediately accused Ukraine of conducting a terror attack, and Russian official responses coalesced rapidly around this accusation.[5] If the drone attack had not been internally staged it would have been a surprise event. It is very likely that the official Russian response would initially have been much more disorganized as Russian officials scrambled to generate a coherent narrative and offset the rhetorical implications of a clear informational embarrassment. The Kremlin has notably failed to generate a timely and coherent informational response to other military humiliations not of its own making, including the falls of Balakliya and Kherson City in September and November 2022.[6]
The rapid and coherent presentation of an official Russian narrative around the strike suggests that Russia staged this incident in close proximity to the May 9th Victory Day holiday in order to frame the war as existential to its domestic audience. The Kremlin may use the strike to justify either canceling or further limiting May 9th celebrations, actions that would likely augment the information effort framing the war in Ukraine as directly threatening Russian observance of revered historical events. ISW has previously assessed that Russia is employing an array of measures to frame the war in Ukraine as existential to Russia’s domestic audience and to prepare for wider societal mobilization.[7]

ISW or Ins ute for the Study of War is usually very good with explanations.
They also indicate degree of certainty and when they make mistakes on a prediction or assessment.
Sometimes one must wait a little longer for them to give out an assessment. They are careful, but clearly aligned with Ukraine and giving them help.
Lately they have delved much more into what is happening within the Russian government and Ministry of Defense. Putin plays a very dangerous game amongst the various military en ies (the government MOD, the various private armies, etc...) So there is a lot of intrigue going on. And a very fine line on how much the Russian people should really know and how much the Russian people need to be involved. So Putin sets his own MOD against against various private en ies and their media. Its interesting how Putin's inner circle lets the blame swing from the ministry of defense and private armies and their very successful bloggers. Putin seems to keep all these people who have power at arms length and guessing on how much they can criticize. This is why there has been so much confusion about calling this a war or special operation and how much to urge on common folk to get on a war footing or to settle down, everything is under control. They switch emphasis from the big bad Ukrainians to these pests who must be put in their place. From "we are fighting for the survival of Russia" to "be calm, we will grind these guys down, the West will give up on them and we will envelope them, patience..." It can get very weird.
