Yeah that's stupid. They should get rid of the emissions inspection (make it statewide that counties can't require it), fortunately Bexar County doesn't have one and I always used the Bexar address for my cars so even when I lived in DFW never had to do that eco-nazi crapola.

No, Texas just repealed the state law mandating the inspections. Counties can still individually require them.

Texas is doing away with the SAFETY inspection, which is $7.50.
The 17 counties are still doing mandatory EMISSIONS inspections to get your sticker, which is an additional $25.50 (as of 2016).
Two separate inspections to get one sticker... in those 17 counties.
So, if you live in a county like Bexar that only had safety inspections, instead of going to get a safety inspection you just pay the $7.50 "replacement" fee. In a county like Dallas that you have to do both, you still pay the $7.50 fee, plus still having to do the regular annual emissions inspection like before, which is a separate inspection and process.

A lot more ty old hazardous personal vehicles on the roadways, like you have in the upper midwest states because a lot of those don't do inspections at all either, just paying to renew stickers. But the problem is that Texas already has some of the worst drivers in the USA. So it will inevitably lead to more wrecks and more incidents like the toppled car completely engulfed in flames I saw on the opposite end of I-35 (northbound while driving southbound) the other day, somewhere between Denton and Fort Worth. I was like holy ... fire... OH IT'S A WHOLE CAR LIKE IN THE MOVIES! I wonder if there's a dead body or multiple even in there. A crispy critter!
i was surprised to learn this was a thing. CA doesnt have them. when i moved to VA, i didnt realize it was a thing here for a long time. saw cars with stickers on the windshield but assumed they were parking passes or somethin, never really paid attention
went nearly a year before realizing i was supposed to get an annual inspection done. never pulled over or got in trouble or anything though.
CA just has a biannual smog check, but not an actual inspection to make sure things are working properly

I mean it isn't that big of a deal. I usually just get it done with an oil change. But let's be honest, it's been pointless ever since COVID. They don't get in the vehicle any more, check the brakes, etc. They just have you flash your lights, honk your horn, and call it done.
