Hey, if it gets people to appreciate Timmy more than I'm all for it. As the article says "Are we [generally] underrating Tim Duncan?" Yep.

I always regarded Timmy as #2 player, and would be in GOAT argument had it not been that lucky Ray Allen shot. It’s not because I’m a biased fan . Timmy didn’t miss the playoffs with 50+ wins except for that boycott year. That’s epitome of excellence and dominance. And without a All-NBA teammates. He basically anchored the team to excel on their different roles.

A friend of mine, albeit a LeBron fan, asked who would I take of any player to build a franchise. Without hesitation, Tim Duncan, 19 years not missing the playoffs, no drama. No televised “Decision” whether he’s still going to be in my team. No rape scandals. No gambling scandals. Just sheer professionalism, from day 1 till the curtain dropped.

Best defensive player of all time and also great on offense in a low scoring era on the lowest pace team.
He’s above Kobe, Shaw, Magic and Bird for sure. I’m have him behind Jordan and Lebron and maybe Kareem

Pretty meaningless if the methodology is not shared though.

Objectively looking at it, there is no doubt Duncan is top 5 all time, and in terms of value to a franchise (the team that drafted him), he is likely top 3.

He is a handful of players who won multiple championships with the team who drafted him (or at least all the championships with one team), while leading the team in most advanced stats in most/all of those championship years. If that is not valuable, I don't know what is.

For sure. But I guess if it's an algorithm that just takes into account accolades/stats then I can see why. Kobe was given like 5-10 all-defense selections based entirely on reputation in the second half of his career. Probably some all-star selections too.

Timmy experienced the opposite bias. Should have won like 5 DPOYs and amazingly got none.

Best defensive player of all time
The older I get the more I recognize what a travesty it was that he didn't get a single DPOY. If he was in LA or NY he would've easily gotten 3-5 of them. He'd be an unquestioned Top 5 with that on his resume.
