MI's are always good entertainment. My lady hates Tom Cruise for whatever reason so in order to watch his movies I have to watch them alone; better for me because she ain't talking the whole way through.

Double dipping on MI today. Wasn't planning to watch MI4 this morning, but found myself with some free time while I was getting new tires put on my car.

    Mission Impossible 5 - Rouge Nation (2015)
    Rating 8.5/10

Ghost Protocol was a tough act to follow, so I was curious how this one would hold up considering how high the bar had been set. I was not disappointed. I had been wondering when they would get to addressing how the IMF as an agency even functions since they are so similar to the CIA, and this film finally delivered an answer. I enjoyed Rebecca Ferguson's character and thought she did a good job bringing that role to life. The previous female agent performances weren't bad by any means, but she had good on-screen chemistry with Cruise and her character did a good job of matching him as far as wits and ability. I liked the undertones in the story about how the governments/agencies don't really give a about the agents lives and see them as just means to and end. I felt like the spy sequences, especially in the earlier parts of the film, were a little more dialed back. Kind of reminded me of the first film. It's funny because in my last review I commented on how the production team had put themselves in a boat of having to one-up the big stunt performances, and this film didn't try to do that.

Overall, it was a very solid entry in the franchise and it's also hard to find much to ding it for. This time, while the villain didn't get a ton of direct character development, his motivations were supported by other revelations in the plot development. I was glad to see that. However, I thought he gave Ferguson's character way too many chances. A true villain would have had her killed for sure when she brought that data drive back and it had been wiped, if not one of the times she had a chance to kill or bring in Cruise's character and let him go. The opera scene was bad ass and I like the ensemble of Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames a lot. I don't know what else they can really do to raise the bar from the last two films, but I'm here for it and looking forward to watching 6 and 7.

    Mission Impossible 6 - Fallout (2018)
    Rating 10/10

I hesitate to give this one 10 out of 10 considering I still have another one to watch and its sequel coming out next year, but damn was this just a really well made action movie. It's unfortunate that Jeremy Renner did not return but considering this must have shot at the same time as Infinity War and Endgame, I'm sure that was a huge conflict. However, I couldn't say I really noticed he was gone as the film progressed due to the insertion of Henry Cavill's CIA character in the IMF team. This film sort of functioned like a "greatest hits" album of previous Mission Impossible story beats, and it was put together in a very interesting way that had me struggling to crack the plot twists before they happened. I am usually pretty good at that kind of thing, so any film that can keep me guessing has my respect.

The bathroom fight scene was awesome, the big car chase scene was amazing and the helicopter chase are the end had me on the edge of my seat. At times it may have felt like there were a lot of moving parts, but it didn't feel like it was trying to do too much. And since they brought back the previous film's villain and had him more involved this time around, that really resolved a lot of the issues I wasn't giving out perfect scores for on the previous films. Could I rewatch this and find something to nitpick on it? Maybe, but I liked it even more than Ghost Protocol which I gave a 9/10 rating, so this one gets a perfect score. Hoping Dead Reckoning Part 1 doesn't let me down.

Going to see it tonight. Super pumped to see it on the big screen, that's been one of my only regrets with 4-6 because they were all good but would have been fun to see in theaters. Will post my review as soon as I get home.

    Mission Impossible 7 - Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023)
    Rating 9/10

I will try to do this review without spoilers since it's still in theaters. Fallout was ing awesome and I had a hard time coming up with anything to ding it for. With the bar set at perfection, I was wondering if it was even possible to match that. I'm happy to report that Dead Reckoning Part 1 came very close to matching Fallout for me. The artificial intelligence plot premise is similar to Terminator/Matrix but still feels like it's taking place naturally in the M:ICU rather than ripping off either of those franchises. It's also super relevant to current events which made it more engaging. I liked that they started to unravel the thread of what Agent Hunt did before the IMF, although that train barely left the station. They are probably saving the major reveals for Part 2, but at least they acknowledged there is some kind of backstory there.

Like Fallout, the action sequences were very well done here. I loved the airport pick pocket scene. The car chase scene that followed it had great action with some good humorous moments baked in that made it one of the more unique vehicle chase sequences in the franchise. However the final sequence on the train along with Cruise's character jumping off the mountain by motorcycle and parachuting down had me on the edge of my seat just like the end of Fallout. I liked Hayley Atwell's performance and it was nice to see her in a non-Marvel action movie. She had good chemistry with Cruise similar to Rebecca Ferguson's character, but the vibe was different since Atwell's character is a pick pocket and not a special agent.

There is one scene already brought up by others in this thread that I agree how it played out was a little head scratching, and in particular Agent Hunt's response to it felt almost out of character to me. I hope this is addressed in Part 2 otherwise it'll probably retrospectively lower my opinion of this film. Great film to see on the big screen and really just enjoyed the out of it.

Yeah, I know the whole story from Fat Man and Little Boy and a really good couple of American Experience episodes -- but it's Nolan and IMAX so I want to see his take on it. , I watched an opera based on the same subject because I like the composer.

I will say that a three hour runtime without an intermission is just stupid. I don't know why Nolan insists people go to the theater for the full movie experience and then physically punishes them for doing so. At least there are recliners in some IMAX theaters now.

It's impossible to not take a pee break without showing up dehydrated. Also, popcorn on a dehydrated stomach is a BAD idea.

For something 3 hours long like Avatar or Lord of the Rings I'd always just wait until it comes out so I can pause and take water and pee breaks at my leisure. Old man like me older than like 19 can't go more than an hour or two without a pee break. And if I get dehydrated my stomach gets upset if I eat anything. I have to stay extremely well hydrated in order to avoid stomach aches in general.

Watched it on Netflix last night. I give this flick a solid 2 out of 10. The CGI was terrible to begin with regarding the dinosaurs and secondly, How many damn things can go wrong to the main characters in a movie. Just watch this crap if you dare and you will see what I mean. I'm glad I didnt pay to see this at the theater, I would be pissed if I had spent 25 cents on it.
