Double dipping on MI today. Wasn't planning to watch MI4 this morning, but found myself with some free time while I was getting new tires put on my car.
Mission Impossible 5 - Rouge Nation (2015)
Rating 8.5/10
Ghost Protocol was a tough act to follow, so I was curious how this one would hold up considering how high the bar had been set. I was not disappointed. I had been wondering when they would get to addressing how the IMF as an agency even functions since they are so similar to the CIA, and this film finally delivered an answer. I enjoyed Rebecca Ferguson's character and thought she did a good job bringing that role to life. The previous female agent performances weren't bad by any means, but she had good on-screen chemistry with Cruise and her character did a good job of matching him as far as wits and ability. I liked the undertones in the story about how the governments/agencies don't really give a about the agents lives and see them as just means to and end. I felt like the spy sequences, especially in the earlier parts of the film, were a little more dialed back. Kind of reminded me of the first film. It's funny because in my last review I commented on how the production team had put themselves in a boat of having to one-up the big stunt performances, and this film didn't try to do that.
Overall, it was a very solid entry in the franchise and it's also hard to find much to ding it for. This time, while the villain didn't get a ton of direct character development, his motivations were supported by other revelations in the plot development. I was glad to see that. However, I thought he gave Ferguson's character way too many chances. A true villain would have had her killed for sure when she brought that data drive back and it had been wiped, if not one of the times she had a chance to kill or bring in Cruise's character and let him go. The opera scene was bad ass and I like the ensemble of Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames a lot. I don't know what else they can really do to raise the bar from the last two films, but I'm here for it and looking forward to watching 6 and 7.
