    They never had a semblance of a democracy. From the Tzars to Lenin to Gorbachev to Yeltsin to Putin it's been a string of autocrats. They had a chance to diverge with Yeltsin but never did.

    The Turks and the French became democratic so anything is possible but culturally Russia seems to want their big man.
