What the do you think the point of the counter-offensive is? It's to reclaim lost territory.

And why do you think Russia is so dug in defensively? It's because they've given up their ambition to destroy the Ukrainian state -- now they simply want to secure Crimea and the other territories Ukraine is trying to take back.

    It's not complicated.
The only one saying russia has “dropped their ambitions” is you.

Why don’t you just say it?

Waiting for that “russia just wants a little” confirmation.

    That would shut me up

    Can you provide that?

The layers and layers of defensive trench systems and countless number mines planted by Russia make it pretty clear Russia isn't planning a major offensive. Occupying new territory requires man power. It's doesn't have the manpower or weapons to do it at this point.

We should scale it back dramatically and make clear to Ukraine that we didn't agree to finance the reclaiming of all lost territory including territory lost before the full scale invasion last year (e.g., Crimea and others). And it's not just about money at this point, we're giving huge amounts of military ammo and equipment that we need for ourselves especially if Taiwan's defense is as high priority as US government makes it out to be. No doubt this is why the Pentagon doesn't want to give away F-16 and ATACMS from our own stock.
    We can make more ammo.

    Russia really can't.

The official US policy for Taiwan is still strategic ambiguity.

But we did agree to that. We agreed to support the entirety of Ukraine efforts to repel the invader, and that includes Crimea. Not to mention that Crimea also has strategic importance due to Sevastopol and the Black Sea.

The only country that has any authority to make concessions in future diplomatic talks is Ukraine.

That is because of the aid NATO is giving them. Take away the aid and Russia is right back to tan offensive to wipe Ukraine off the map.

Putin's goals are not hard to fathom. They are the same goals of the intelligence clique he was in while part of the Stassi. They want all of the territory of the Warsaw Pact because it makes them highly defensible from any ground based offensive. He wrote about it in his manifesto.

This notion that we can pull back aid and everything would be rosy doesn't hold water.

European countries are welcome to continue giving aid to Ukraine. We've committed more military aid to Ukraine then all of them combined. If Ukraine scales back or abandons its counter-offensive ambitions and preserves the forces that were to be committed to that, then it will still have a lot to defend the territory that isn't already occupied by Russia and wouldn't need nearly as much aid. Russia is in a defensive posture anyway, because it's simply trying to hold on to the territories it currently occupies. Putin's goals have changed because reality has changed. Russia has clearly abandoned its ambitions of "taking Kiev" because of all the losses they've taken.

I want to see Ukraine work towards a ceasefire, but like I said, Russia wants that to lock in territorial gains and therefore Ukraine doesn't want that -- not while it continues to receive so much from the West.

    Maybe so, but...

"We agree with what we signed onto a long time ago," the president said. "And that there's one China policy, and Taiwan makes their own judgments about their independence. We are not moving-- we're not encouraging their being independent. We're not-- that-- that's their decision."

"But would U.S. forces defend the island?" Pelley asked.

"Yes, if in fact there was an unprecedented attack," Mr. Biden said.

"So unlike Ukraine, to be clear, sir," Pelley said, "U.S. forces, U.S. men and women would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion?"

    "Yes," the president said.
