It’s sort of silly, I guess, to try to keep playing democracy at this point. If you’re trying to play chess, and your opponent’s response to putting them in check is to flip over the board and punch you in the face, what’s the point of trying to put all the pieces back on the board where they were like it never happened? You’re not in a chess match anymore.
You can’t peacefully have a representative-democratic cons utional republic if only one side wants to have one. You can’t just blame all this on Trump being some kind of inscrutable snake charmer putting them in a spell anymore. The open-eyed strategy of the old-stock Anglo-Celtic population in the face of changing demographics is installation of a right-wing dictatorship behind the neutered facade of the old republic. Trump is beloved because he alone will deliver that.

Democrats will never do what Republicans do because they’re still a liberal party. The Republican Party is not conservative anymore, but rather right-wing populist. The will of the people is not manifested in a right-wing populist movement through representative democratic elections. The principle of representation within the in-group is reduced down to a single charismatic leader who in himself embodies not just the will of the people, but also their hopes and dreams. He defines who is Us and who is Them.
Once a polity reaches this point, you cannot reason people out of it. Once a tribe is defined, loyalty to the tribe is hard-wired. Belonging to a tribe is a more basic need than self-esteem. In prehistoric tribes, disloyalty to the tribe could lead to its being defeated by a rival tribe, which meant murder, rape, starvation, dissolution of the tribe. Banishment from the tribe probably meant starvation and death.
Tribal loyalty trumps reason.
Tribal truth trumps objective truth.
The most basic principle of politics is Us and Them.
Red and Blue are separate nations with separate tribal truths.
Democrats want to talk about the brotherhood of man, about how interconnected we all are, how we all have to work together across national boundaries to solve global problems.
These are the words of the educated few, for whom reason trumps tribal truths. It is not how the great many think.
You can’t unify people against big structural problems or medium-term environmental threats. You can only unify people against Them. Since Us versus Them is an internal fight in the United States, there is zero hope of going back to the status quo ante 2016.

I still think the fascists are so unpopular they could get buried at the polls and fairly soon. 2022 was an historic flop for the party out of power. GOP is running on the same they lost on.

Trying to remain in power after losing an election should have life changing consequences, even for fellow travelers. and especially for government officials who supported it. The precedent should have been the 1861 Congress that refused to seat secessionists.
