We do know, however, that there are many Ukrainian (nationals) in the far east of the country who identify with or simply prefer Russia for whatever reason(s). It's partially why Russia was able to take Crimea so incredibly easily.
Sadly, some have the hubris to think Uncle Sam can always just buy a solution to every global problem (and while we run records debts).
