Ukraine was fighting in the East and taking provocative actions against Crimea (like trying to cutoff almost all the water supply).

Then Zelensky threated to join NATO and Putin made clear he feared Ukraine would use false flag attacks against NATO (activating Article V) to justify taking back Crimea.

It all comes back to Crimea.

The main reason, if one actually takes the time to talk to eastern europeans and Ukrainians in particular, is that Ukraine was moving towards a liberal democracy.

Ukraines economic growth from being closer to the EU or even a member of that large market would mean that Ukraine's standard of living would finally measureably be better than that of kleptocratic russia.

Putin views the very idea of democracy itself as a threat to the moscovy empire. he is right. The colonial empire they have built on multiple genocides and mass murder couldn't stand up under any kind of democratic system.
