I think the era of human rights is coming to an end. It was always more aspirational than real. But I don’t think there’s a will to make universal human rights happen. This or that group will criticize this or that atrocity from afar, but the global preference cascade is toward tribal self-interest and power.

If Israel wipes out the Palestinians, they still have to contend with all the other Arabs and all the other Muslims. The mistake in this line of thinking is assuming there is any kind of Christian unity on the Israel-Palestine question, even among the theologically conservative. Intense pro-Israel sentiment flows from Dispensational theology, which is a feature of American evangelicalism. Catholics don’t have such strong feelings. Orthodox are strongly pro-Palestinian.
