I believe the first use of this terrible analogy was used by Texas gubernatorial candidate Clayton Williams in 1990. It completely derailed his campaign, so naturally a Michigan GOP candidate for the state house used in 2022 and predictably lost as a result.

I’m mixed on Bob Knight. His style would never work today, and his personality would never fit societally today, but he seems to have touched a lot of lives in a positive way. Hard to judge him as a man without knowing him. Guys who coach like him are truly dinosaurs in the coaching profession. RIP.

As far as the expression, it's been around for a long time I don't think he or any of the well known people who used it came up with it originally, they were just parroting a stupid expression they had heard before.
