The reporters all fear the s bag. Should have asked why did he say “that’s not who we are”. He made it a class thing during his moment of senility then tries to change tune after the organization told him this is not sitting well with the fans. The s bag needed to apologize instead of turning on the media and straight lying.

Pop's little stunt definitely had "old man yells at cloud" vibes. It looked dumb on camera and pretty much backfired because people started booing more

That said, I do think Pop's heart is in the right place. Kawhi is a and did the Spurs dirty, but Pop is probably the last person on Earth to hold a grudge for it.

He helped build Leonard into the player that he was/is, so imagine someone booing your little kid out on the court or field. Maybe it's a bit soft, but it was a kind gesture to show Kawhi he still cares...and if you watch this video, it looks like Kawhi had to wipe away some tears after their little discussion.

See, I view this the same as him telling people not to boo. People should be able to boo, and Pop should be able to express political views. Attempting to stifle either is unacceptable.
To be honest most companies have very strict rules when it comes to discussing their Political views at the workplace

True, but most companies don't have one of the most successful employees in their respective areas, either.

Do you think anyone was going to try to tell Steve Jobs or Bill Gates from stating their political views? If they tried, they'd be packing up their desk at the end of the day.

Not saying Pop is above scrutiny...nobody should be. But for better or worse, he has a tenure as one of the best coaches in the NBA (if not all sports), so yes...I'm sure he gets a little leeway in these areas for better or worse.

Also, NBA is the "woke" league and actually seems to encourage players and coaches to talk about social issues, so it's not like it's totally out of left field.

Pop was just trying to rattle Kawhi at the line, make sure Kawhi got it they were booing him. Kicker icing 101.

Pop was just trying to poke the bear.

That was quite clear live, and I think it shocked him.
Wow, I was at the game so I couldn't see any closeups of his reaction. Look, I love Pop and all he's done. But it's one thing to treat the media and players the way he does. It's a whole other thing with fans. Don't poke THAT bear.

I remember when Woody Hayes the legendary coach of Ohio St. knocked an opposing player down when running down the sidelines with the ball. His time had come. Same with Joe Paterno. This is Pops Woody Hayes moment. The fans are going to turn on him now.

Pop grabbing the mic and acting like an ass during the game hardly merits comparison with Paterno covering up for a ing child molester.

I noticed that also, and in the tone of Kawhi’s voice, he seems affected by Pop’s kind gesture. Anyway, Kawhi is still an ungrateful biyotch and deserving of the booing from the fans for what he did. Also the players feed off from the fans, both of their applauding and booing of the opponents. It’s very much part of watching sports live and what makes it fun. I normally agree with Pop, but last night he was wrong. Still that action doesn’t mean that Pop is the wrong man for the job. He’s the only coach in the league who will not be pressured by the Wemby circus, and he will wait for Wemby to get stronger before making moves. Couch GM’s and fair weather fans of course are just so happy they can use to troll with. Pathetic

Joe Paterno had an assistant who raped little boys in the locker room. The fans already turned on Pop for the horrible performance of this team, and this microphone thing is likely his attempt to deflect, because Kawhi has played a dozen games in SA and he's always been booed.

This is rich coming from Stephen A Smith, one of the biggest hypocrites at ESPN. Dude will say whatever it takes to give him more screen time and try to boost ratings.

Pop's personality with the media is a schtick. He knows he has to deal with them and learned that it's easier to play the "hardass coach" role than answer the same stupid questions during and after games.

Notice how SAS also calls out how Pop goes around restaurants and hands out cash to all the workers for big dinners.

My nephew once ran into Pop at a bar and decided to buy him a beer, and Pop sat and talked to him for a good 20-30 minutes instead of just brushing him off as a geeking fan. Imagine being a GOAT coach and still taking the time to sit and converse with some random kid who brings you a beer.

That's the kind of guy Pop is.

I took it as more of a compliment to Pop, but still...he turns that around and the point of his whole soliloquy was Pop is mean to the media

I agree with his points that if fans pay for tickets, they are allowed to boo. I'm not much of a boo'er, unless it's at the refs. But to each their own.

I still can understand the coaches approach to some of the things. Until Victor knows how to play better, there's no real obvious leader on the team, and so for the players to figure it out, part of that includes figuring out who's going to assume a leadership role. And I also think they do need to learn how to figure out their own hierarchy a little bit under Victor. But where I disagree is on defense. Defense is all about coaching and their defense is horrible and to me that is in excusable

Until Victor knows how to play better, there's no real obvious leader on the team, . . .
One of the benefits of having such a young roster is that it will allow Victor to take a leadership role earlier on. If there was even one high-end vet on the team that would be an almost impossible task.

Defense is all about coaching and their defense is horrible and to me that is in excusable
This is a league of offense-based players. Therefore, in the NBA, defense is mostly responsibility and effort.

There is no reason this team should be this bad defensively and that does reflect on the coach.

Windhorst mentioned Pop handing out money at restaurants. Pop is a major figure in professional sports and has put himself out there with political commentary and this latest ery. It's Smith's job to comment on what happens in sports, and yes, Pop isn't the epitome of class when it comes to his demeanor with other people trying to do their jobs. Pop is like someone you'd work with who has been retiring for 3 years, doesn't come to work most of the time and even when he does, he's flippant and dismissive but won't be fired because he has 45 years of dirt on people.
