So there's about three issues going on.
1. Pop isn't a great coach or fan of the NBA'S current brand of basketball. In some ways he's trying to get player and run a system that can beat the brand under the brands rules. This is causing issues and tying a hand behind the team's back. It causes frustration in both players and fans.
2. Age energy and success, Pop has had a good amount of success long term his coaching tree is large and having success. Would you as an up coming assistant rather work under pop in a system that is at a low point or work for the warriors or rockets with a staff of people who you're coworkers with and been around. This thins the assistant coach pool a bit. As the warriors are still in their window and it can be argued that other teams in the pop tree are on the upswing.
3. Not quite there. We are learning quite a few things this year, both about the spurs victor and pop. First and most importantly we have learned that victor is unquestionably going to be a center, a mobile center that has range, a jump shot and ball handling but a center. However he needs a year or two to really put everything together in that role which is fine. The spurs can use a year or two of high draft picks to put a roster together. We are learning Sochan is going to be a very good glue guy at power forward, he is going to have handles and passing. He's going to be comfortable switching every defender on the floor for 5 or 6 years barring injury. His catch and shoot game is getting reliable at range Devon Vassel is a pretty good wing, probably not ever going to be Batman but can definitely be a Robin.
Keldon and Sochan are both good team guys. Willing to backseat themselves a bit for long term team development. Johnson is a tweener forward who has talent but isn't going to cornerstone a team. He is ok with being a big rotation player off the bench when he thinks about it but it's hard in the moment for him. He believes in himself and kinda thinks he can heroball his way through but doesn't quite have that talent and physical level. We need a borderline all star level wing that preferably is more oriented towards the three than the two spot. We really need a primary point guard. Devon Vassel isn't a particularly good ball-handler for a two there's no talk of him being a combo guard. Sochan is a good ball handler for a power forward and in that role is a good passer. We can all see he is a secondary initiator at this level though. Tree Jones is a guy who can have a good comfortable long term career as a trusted backup point. He can also probably get a shot as a starter for a poor team somewhere it depends on his goals and agent. Spurs should be looking to draft their next point guard in the lottery. Spurs need/want a good big center for the next 3 to 4 years and maybe always Victor isn't going to be able to battle the Jochics and Embids inside for a full game. 10-15 minutes ok, full game no.
