If he/pop/coaches turned the historical worse defense into say 15 to 20 in defensive rating, then Wemby has a shot. But we are 29th.
It’s an individual award, the best defender, not the best defender on the best defense. He’s so elite, he has DEFENSIVE gravity the way that Steph has OFFENSIVE gravity. Teams bend their offense away from him.
To be leading the league in stocks at 19 is a monumental accomplishment, and shows what a generational defender he has the reasonable potential to be. Victor has 73. Compare this to Chet's 55, Evan Mobley's 50, Giannis at 49, and Embiid at 46.
He likely won't win DPOY for various reasons, but if you really want to practice an exercise in recognizing good fortune, just do this: imagine an alternate reality where the Spurs win the #3 pick in the draft, and take Scoot Henderson.

You can't argue defensive gravity if we are the second worst defensive team. Without him we might be the worse. That's how awards work. Without this player, what will this team look like? Worst defensive team in the West? We are. Worst team in the West? We are.
2014 Bulls 2nd def rtg
2015 Spurs 2nd def rtg
2016 Spurs 1st def rtg

2020 Bucks 1st def rtg
2021 Utah 4th def rtg
2022 Celtics 2nd def rtg
2023 Grizzlies 2nd def rtg
That’s your overly complicated interpretation. What the award is is who is the best defender. That’s an easy question with an easy answer.
So,twice in 10 years it was the best defender on the best defense?
if Spurs don’t finish the season in the top 5, then he shouldn’t even dream of an award this season
According to you.
He will probably make 2nd team all defense. If we can pass him the ball in better spots then he might make 3rd team all nba
He also leads the NBA in blocks per game.
That’s your takeaway?
nobody said it goes to best defender on best defensive team. The comment you initially replied to mentioned top 15-20
your sniff reflex truly knows no bounds
ROY award doesn't care about the team results.
this is a thread about dpoy
And rebounding, blocks and steals are the shiny things that attract voters. See Camby, Marcus.
I always though DPOY award was more of a lifetime achievement award. Sometimes given to people who didn't necessarily have the best year, but were deserving in the past and just haven't won it yet.
He has zero chance at winning DPOY with our team defense being as bad as it is
Not practical that they will give it to a rookie whose team is at worst defensive rating. tbh
I think his point is that if a player's team defense is not top 2 in the league there is very little chance of that player winning DPOY, and no chance at all if it's outside the top 4. At least judging on the past 10 years. In a vacuum team results shouldn't matter for an individual award, but in reality they do.
The same goes for MVP. It took video game numbers by Westbrook for him to win that on a bad team. Since basic defensive counting stats aren't nearly as detailed (or informative) as those on offense, I don't think even an all time great season-long defensive effort by Wemby would be enough to get DPOY if the team defense is this putrid. If the Spurs were league average? Maybe. But not when they're bottom 5.
Wemby should win multiple DPOY awards in his career at this rate, but not this year.
You wrote « an » award, not DPOY.
Blocks and steals are defense ?![]()
Relax bro, Sochan just had a good game, no need to hate Victor anymore...
No need to put much effort or faith in the voting process.
The winner is selected by a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom casts a vote for first, second and third place selections
