For a lot of people, including a few of my close family members, it's all about the taxes even if they act differently, though, to be fair. They believe in the personal responsibility that someone like Lincoln would have supported, not realizing everything from the roads to their jobs to their stores to their personal safety are all net benefits of taxpaying.
I know them personally, so I can say that it's the case for this very select group - but I feel I can extrapolate for a large portion of Trump voters, especially those who are minorities or POC or otherwise aren't identifiably racist/fascist. If you want to "move up", especially financially, it's bad form or whatever to be a democrat because they're taking "your" hard-earned money.
I'm not a fan of the way he said it, but Obama was 100% right when he said "[you specifically] didn't build that." It's a team effort, and most Republicans have lost the thread in that regard.
