By the present ideology of the Republican Party, of course Reagan was a RINO. But forty years ago he was the vanguard of the conservative revolution which has long since run its course.
But make no mistake, it is the GOP that has changed and eschewed conservatism; it’s not as though a re-examination of Reagan shows that he wasn’t actually conservative in the first place.
The Trump redux may maintain conservative economic policies simply by inertia, but the authoritarian state that comes after will shift away markedly towards economic nationalism.
