"Leave that to me."
We're gonna make you play PG. Buckle up boyo!
Actually good passers showing just how easy it is to just lob it to Wemby every single time down the court. For real, Wemby could literally average 20 ppg just out of lobs, if his teammates knew how to actually pass.
-start Collins next to him
-play him 28mpg
-load manage CP3
-play Sochan/Branham/Wesley lineups
done deal
Didn't he play PF for much of the game? I'm not dismissing what happened, because there's literally no downside to Wemby scoring off lobs. But if you think him playing the four in the NBA wouldn't work because of a bunch of factors, why would you assume lobs would work the same?
Nope, he played PF alongside Rudy for the first 5 minutes of the game. Not conincidentally, his least productive stint (only 2 pts in 5 minutes, compared to 22 in 14 minutes at center). He started getting all those lobs as the center, setting all the screens.
If the lobs work in FIBA, where everything is more congested, they will work in the NBA. You just need better personel.
I had to listen to Chinook for half the season explain how difficult it was to throw a lob pass to a 7ft 5 guy. Then he explained how it was impossible to throw lobs to Wemby and meanwhile the Mavs somehow threw 60 lobs to their center and France is showing exactly how easy it is to throw lobs to Wemby. Wild takes found only on Spurstalk
FIBA has a much less even talent level than the NBA. Apparently Turkey was missing their top guys and is not a qualifying team anyway. If Wemby was playing center around four perimeter guys, were things still congested?
Contrast those easy lobs for dunks and you would have had....
vassell dribbling for 18 seconds AWAY from wemby and launching a fallaway 35 footer...
sochan dribbling into the middle and bringing his defender over so he can help wembys defender
zollins launching a 35 foot brick
branham dribbling into traffic and looking wemby off to shoot a contested two and misses
wesley shooting an airball
Pretty sure Wemby got his fair share of lobs during the season and I was pointing out why the plays people would complain about were not good examples.
But I guess it's easy to pretend I made an extreme black-and-white take so can feel better about yourself.
More congested than the NBA without a doubt. Not only you have more space because the 3pt line is farther from the basket, you also have no 3 seconds rule in Fiba. Also, Fiba always tends to play bigger than the NBA. The lineup the Turks were trotting out there wasn't smaller than your average NBA team.
I recomend you to watch the game before arguing just for the sake of arguing, tbh.
I watched the first-half highlights. I guess we'll have to see when the full-game highlights come out.
But no, I don't think we're going to see a ton to show that Turkey's B-team is comparable to an NBA team defensively.
Um whut?
Chinook has always been kind of a contrarian, tbh. When everyone and their mothers already knew Kawhi > Aldridge, he insisted it was better for the Spurs to have Aldridge as the #1 option for some obscure reason.
When everybody realized Aldridge was better off becoming the center of the team because of the way the NBA was heading, Chinook was still coming up with moves to get centers.
Now that everybody realizes that the Wemby lobs could be weaponized a lot more if not for the lack of talent and IQ of the rest of the roster, he says it is Wemby's fault.
Can’t do it. That became obvious down the stretch last year. They were 6-4 at the end, with 2 starters and our 6th man shut down.
Bro, you literally just made a whole thread that caused a bunch of people to go at you just to talk about why I was wrong, and I'm the contrarian?
I think you're referring to you saying Aldridge not being winning ball and that Aldridge needed to be traded. I very much believed his post-ups were better to build an offense around than an iso game from the perimeter. It turned out we all got to see that with DeRozan anyway. Kawhi was a budding superstar, but no one's been able to build a system around him. When everyone and their mothers already knew Kawhi > Aldridge, he insisted it was better for the Spurs to have Aldridge as the #1 option for some obscure reason.
The Spurs never didn't have centers with Aldridge. I think it would be one thing arguing I believed in Aldridge finding his old self longer than others who wanted to move on to Poeltl would make more sense as the example here. When everybody realized Aldridge was better off becoming the center of the team because of the way the NBA was heading, Chinook was still coming up with moves to get centers.
I think people who don't understand that bigs need to develop an off-ball game and not just be tall and athletic are just looking at it superficially. I think we're going to see a lot of improvement in Victor's lob game this year, and a lot of people are going to miss the things he's doing differently and just assume it's all Paul being a magic passer -- even though he'll show that same improvement when Paul isn't throwing the ball. Now that everybody realizes that the Wemby lobs could be weaponized a lot more if not for the lack of talent and IQ of the rest of the roster, he says it is Wemby's fault.
Victor was eighth in the lead in dunks and third in alley-oop finishes behind Claxton and Gobert. Both of those guys played more minutes than him, though Claxton still beat him per minute. I'll have to crunch the team alley-oop stats, but I imagine they're above average and were even before Wemby joined. A lot of the talk about the Spurs being bad at the passes is unfounded.
The only folks "going at me" were the ones thinking I was excusing the FO for trading the picks, when I never did that.
I think Aldridge ball not being winning ball has pretty much been cemented, tbh. Or are you still trying to argue otherwise?I think you're referring to you saying Aldridge not being winning ball and that Aldridge needed to be traded. I very much believed his post-ups were better to build an offense around than an iso game from the perimeter. It turned out we all got to see that with DeRozan anyway.
Also, I said DeRozan ball was just as bad as Aldridge ball, so I don't know why you try to bring him up as if that would make any kind of point in your favour.
The Spurs built a B2B 60+ wins seasons system with Kawhi as their #1. The Raptors built a championship winning one.Kawhi was a budding superstar, but no one's been able to build a system around him.
I think a lot of us do. That's why we see Victor and see how smart and active he's moving off the ball. Maybe is you the one that needs to see less superficially.I think people who don't understand that bigs need to develop an off-ball game and not just be tall and athletic are just looking at it superficially.
Sure, if Victor suddenly starts getting a lot more lobs, it will be because of improvements Victor made, not because of adding an all-time great lob passer. How convenient.I think we're going to see a lot of improvement in Victor's lob game this year, and a lot of people are going to miss the things he's doing differently and just assume it's all Paul being a magic passer -- even though he'll show that same improvement when Paul isn't throwing the ball.
In the second half of the season when we actually started running an offense and playing through him. That’s when we started throwing lobs like crazy to him. Which is why in my post I said I had to listen for you HALF the season. As in the 1st half of the season we didn’t throw him many lobs and we were throwing passes to him. That’s just a fact. You can try to sugarcoat it anyway you want but there was example after example of Wemby calling for lobs and the players not giving it to him and you defending them saying how hard it is to throw a lob to a 7ft 5 guy.
Newsflash: It isn’t hard to do. And yet you still stand by it for some reason
Anyways I didn’t mean to on Chinook. I meant it more like a good times good times thing. Chinook is our resident cap expert and I agree with him on a lot of things. I also agree with Lebowen. the tank. We have our generational talent. Pop only has 2 more seasons max. Wemby needs to know the expectations of a winning franchise and how to deal with being a leader. Getting Lauri for KJ and 3 FRPs is a no brainer. No team who has tanked for multiple seasons has ever won a le. So I don’t know where this notion of tanking brings championships comes from. Tanking brings you your foundational player. After that you don’t tank and do your best to win. Plus doesn’t anybody actually trust Brian Wrong anymore?
