Not an issue here, because he’s only here to rehab his image. He’ll be gone at the trade deadline or the buyout deadline, which is why his deal is structured as a one year contract. Players on a one year have absolute control over any trades, because they can veto them.

Good news is his Spurs contract is one year.

    Some notes.
I do not see a lot of roster turnover and indeed the younger cores that CPO sniffers are citing as being imparted so much wisdom blah blah are still on his 3 main teams during CPOs duration. Hornets Clippers Phoenix.

    Clippers
2012 R2 loss to Spurs 0-4. Vinny Del coach. Imo an excellent Spurs team. Completely burned by OKCref in playoffs.
2015 after being ahead 3-1, Coq Rivers coach.
2016 ahead 2-0 then backdoor swept.

    Houston
2018 ahead 3-2 vs Golden gots, Paul got injured and missed Gms 6 7. Imo one of if not CPOs best playoff year.
2019 (it was either 18 or 19) one game was a 2002 Lakers Kings level corrupt reffing in favor of Golden gots. Several high IQ boardies saw the game and declared the reffing 100 determined to see ABC Warriors thru to the *win.

2021 Finals vs Bucks. After being ahead 2-0 got backdoor swept.
2022 Phoenix after being ahead 3-2

I'm torn. What if we're fighting for a play-in spot, do we still cut CP loose? That could mean the difference between the lottery and a play-in spot, easily (if we're pretty much done this off-season in terms of big moves, which I have a distinct feeling we are).

My gut tells me we do get rid of CP, so the point is moot is what I mean. I just hope we overachieve and he wants to stick with us as a 6 seed. Obviously doubtful

Do we know this for a fact? Sure seems logical, however...
Is CPO one of Pops free agent butt buddies to be given an LVPau / Softridge type lopsided buyout or worse yet, extension?

You have to, if that is the agreement.

True. I just hope the agreement is a playoff spot and we do (much) better than expected.

He may be stuck with us and not an issue. And then plays another year, then retires, then joins the coaching staff, then...we'll, who knows, really. But I think this year for CP could go lots of ways.

None of you have addressed the decline in playoffs after he joins new teams then beyond Year 1. Along with rookie New Orleans as a very good rookie then after his 3rd year peak.

Repeat, this could still bode very well for Spurs in Year 1 of CPO.

It’s irrelevant. He’s 39 and here for a year, and maybe not even a whole year.

    Assumes facts not in evidence.
What happened to the great wisdom and know how he purportedly imparted to younger core players with Hornets Clippers Phoenix?
How long will his employ and effect last?

+ we've seen Popped on many occasions reward his pets with playing time and fat contracts to the detriment of the team.

I vote for less then 1 year ideal, 1 year absolute max.
    Coach? Never.

Rumors have long been that he gets a lot out of players but wears out his welcome. Maybe he's like Avery Johnson in a way, in that he gets on players' nerves. Some guys react well, but not everyone wants to live up to his demanding standards. Some guys like to coast.

    Hey on topic.
I think your point is 100 valid.
Do his "demanding standards" mean the way he wants to see the ball move -or not. Which was all too often in his hands. That is what i have seen of Paul.
Vs hitting people with passes when they are really open, having a truly Beautiful Game. So not a case of them wanting to "coast", rather their ideas of strategy were just as valid as his.
Perhaps better as time went on.

No denying the facts of the playoff record.

Loved rooting against paul as a basketball player, which is a testament to his game, but the respect I have for him and those runs is above and beyond when compared to a player like kevin durant. Probably could have gne to philly and had a better shot at a ring, but decided to try to build something from nothing.

i highly doubt we cut him if spurs make the playoffs. That would mean spurs have definitely leveled up, if a team like the mavs could luck their way into the finals, a wildcar wemby driven spurs playoff team would be scary for any team to face.

    Last 3 years:
    65
    59
    58 games

Paul may literally only play a half a season for the Spurs. Willingly or due to injury.

Regardless let's hope is year 1 is beneficial.

I am optimistic. Lets see how our young players can cope with a veteran like Paul who does not shy away from calling you out if you do the same mistake twice.
