But Gen Charles Flynn, a career US officer, who was surely familiar with the history, apparently worried more about the optics of responding with force to a violent attack on the US government than he worried about the government being attacked.

Interesting that Gen. Scott called interfering with the electoral count insurrection -- seems a direct parallel, as well as revealing historical understanding of the term by US officers.

For me, riot, putsch and rebellion work too. But there does seem to be directly analogous historical support for insurrection, which seemed to me a bit of a stretch at first.
Autogolpe/autocoup still seems the most accurate description to me. Trump tried to use legal, procedural and political levers to remain in power after he lost the election in 2020
