2 party system means the people most engaged are the ones out of power and angry. There's no other choice but the "other" so that's where they are. If the EC was reformed, and/or the Cons ution amended, so that not gaining 270 electoral votes wouldn't essentially give the election to Congress to decide, then we'd see more third party representation. In this country, unless your party can win the Presidency, they're essentially dead in the water. If a 3rd party had a legitimate chance, such as in a multi-stage run-off election for candidates receiving x amount of EC, then they'd be able to lead more supporters to Congress as well.
Not saying any of that would happen overnight, even with major changes which won't ever happen. But it'd open the door for future generations. As is, it's nailed shut on anybody who can't command 270
