Turns out Haitians are in the US because of Trump.

Donald Trump extended Temporary Protected Status for Haitians

President Donald Trump’s administration has extended an immigration designation that benefits about 50,000 Haitians in the United States.

Trump’s Department of Homeland Security will extend the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) offered to Haitian nationals as a result of the 7 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Caribbean nation on Jan. 12, 2010.

Haiti’s current TPS was designated through July 22, 2017.

On May 22, DHS Secretary John Kelly announced he would extend the designation for six more months, from July 23, 2017, though Jan. 22, 2018. Whether TPS will be extended once again in 2018 is uncertain.

Routh seems to be a straight kook

in the old days, mouse or Galileo would be here instantly to explain how Routh is a carefully groomed patsy, but who knows?

my working hypothesis is that board conservatives are holding their tongues in public and waiting for Trump to win, so they can get sweet revenge on liberals and minorities IRL.

For most of the race to replace retiring Senator Rob Portman, Vance struggled. He was unable to raise much money both in the primary, and even after. This forced him to give himself a large loan ($700,000) to get through the primary, and after the primary, his first task was to raise money to erase a large debt he had run up. So how did he get through that primary? Simple: he was bailed out by $10 million in outside spending by ... billionaire [Peter Theil] who hired him for his first venture job.

Later in the general, the GOP Senate Leadership Fund had to parachute in and spend $28 million to bail him out again “amid concerns about his strength in a GOP-leaning state”—a diversion of money that earned criticism because it meant less dollars in Senate races Republicans went on to lose.

And that’s just the money side.

Vance also was struggling to get any traction politically. As Politico wrote, even late in the primary, “He was lagging in the polls. His cash was running low. With the state’s primary fast approaching, J.D. Vance’s chances of winning the Ohio GOP Senate nomination didn’t look promising.”

His own consultants warned of his precipitous decline in internal polls (he was underwater with key GOP voters) due to his past anti-Trump positions.

The consultant urged a “course correction,” and they got one in a few months, when rumors began that Trump was considering endorsing him (Vance and his billionaire backer had met with Trump in Mar-a-Lago the prior year).

When rumors circulated that Trump was considering endorsing Vance, Vance’s standing was so poor in Ohio that Republican leaders across the state (including the current State Republican chair) wrote an open letter pleading with Trump not to endorse him.

Vance's claim that Haitians are causing HIV and tuberculosis cases to skyrocket appears to be entirely PFA as well. He's *very close* to blood libel territory here.

Data from the Ohio Department of Health and Clark County Combined Health District — which Vance presumably could easily obtain, given that he’s one of the state’s senators — shows that there are barely any new cases of either TB or HIV in Clark County, of which Springfield is the county seat.

The most recent data available, for 2018-22, shows that in 2018, Clark County reported 10 new HIV infections. Six new HIV infections were reported there in 2019, six again in 2020, 12 in 2021, and 13 in 2022. These five years of data reveal that between 2018-22, the county had a ulative total of 322 HIV diagnoses — while the state’s ulative total during this time period was 39,729 HIV diagnoses. To put it simply, Clark County, which includes Springfield, represented less than 1% of all HIV diagnoses in Ohio during this time period.

A December 2022 report of TB cases in Clark County prepared for the Clark County Combined Health District goes back a full decade, showing several incidences of 1, 2, 3, and sometimes zero cases of active TB in the entire county each year.

Clark County Combined Health District Commissioner Chris Cook told NBC News that Vance’s claim of a surge in diseases there is false: “Overall, we have not seen a substantial increase in all reportable communicable diseases. In fact, if you look at all reportable communicable diseases together (minus COVID) for the year ending 2023 you will see that we are at our lowest rate in Clark County since 2016.” And according to Bruce Vanderhoff, the director of Ohio’s Health Department, the state isn’t seeing a “measurable or discernible increase” in vaccine-preventable illnesses

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—They come to Ohio from one of the most desperately poor places in the Western Hemisphere. They have few to no belongings. In many cases, they are uneducated, and most don’t speak English well. They do not understand the local culture where they have settled—and it shows: in their dress, in their speech, in their manners, in their housing arrangements, in the food they eat, and in the music they dance to.

Most profess to be Christians, but many maintain supers ious folk magic traditions from their homeland, and many quietly hold to a belief in witchcraft. They blithely violate social taboos. Locals complain that they are stealing their jobs, driving up costs, and consuming too much in the way of social services. And then there are the dietary norms: Though the rumors no doubt exceed the reality, some of them eat animals not generally considered food by the good people of Ohio. Ask the locals, and many of them will quietly say that they wish they would all go back to where they came from.

But that was a long time ago. And while J.D. Vance’s hillbilly ancestors may not have been the inbred, possum-eating, supers ious bushwhackers of legend and lore, as they descended on Ohio from the hills of Kentucky they had more than a little in common with the Haitian immigrants Sen. Vance now spends his days vilifying in terms that would have been familiar to Fritz Hippler, the filmmaker whose 1941 propaganda film Der ewige Jude comes to its climax with images of leering kosher butchers covered in the blood of animals slaughtered in the service of “the so-called Jewish religion.”

Targeting a particular (totally legal: Trump extended their temporary emergency status in 2017) immigrant group to bring attention to problems that group isn't causing is immoral and dangerous, totally apart from being deceptive.

Trump and Vance are way more disruptive to Springfield, Ohio than Haitians, tbh. It's not even a contest at this point.

Today Vance said he considers the Haitians in Springfield to be illegal, so he'll continue call them that.

The ethnonationalism stands out, I would expect this from Nathan89, and I guess now from Republican VP candidates.

It's looking more and more like the mass deportation plank in the Republican platform is sincere.

to be perfectly clear, once legal impediments are removed, popular resistance only remains to mass deportation of millions of our neighbors and longtime fellows.

the probable revocation of 14A jus soli, if Trump wins, boggles, tbh.

seems to have adopted Trump's tactic of lying nonstop

JD Vance: “Murders are up by 81% because of what Kamala Harris has allowed to happen in Springfield"

Daniel Driscoll, Republican Prosecutor in Springfield: “During the time that I’ve been with the office, 21 years now, we have not had any murders involving the Haitian community”

Vance slammed by the Springfield News-Sun

Since these claims began circulating, there have been dozens of separate threats to schools, government offices, officials and hospitals that have disrupted daily life. The city’s annual celebration of diversity, arts and culture, CultureFest, was recently canceled. On Wednesday, three grocery stores were evacuated due to threats and the Springfield election debate was canceled.

Beyond terrifying the innocent population of Springfield, this deliberate spread of misinformation will require resources — taxpayer funds that are desperately needed elsewhere — to address the fallout. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has sent 36 members of its field force to sweep Springfield City Schools each morning before classes and to stay around during school. The Ohio Department of Public Safety has provided the use of its bomb detection dogs and several 30-foot high patrol towers equipped with cameras.

Politicians lie. If newspapers were to write an editorial every time a political figure was found lying, we would have long ago exhausted ink and newsprint.

Sen. Vance’s lie is remarkable for a politician in that he not only outright admits to the falsehood, but that he is willing to do it again if it leads to the result he’s looking for.

We believe his conduct over the past week is unbecoming of a U.S. Senator and violates the public’s trust in the esteemed office. His reckless disregard for truth has endangered members of our community and further undercuts Americans’ faith in government at a time when that faith is already perilously close to depletion.

We insist that Sen. Vance immediately stop spreading unsubstantiated, inflammatory rumors about our communities – his cons uents. Amplifying hateful rhetoric is not the proper way to draw attention to or address important issues we have been reporting on for years.

Senator, Ohioans need your help, not your hate. Listen to local leaders about the needs in their communities and focus on identifying ways to solve problems instead of creating new ones.
OUR VIEW: JD Vance’s behavior is unbecoming of his office (springfieldnewssun.com)
