Cissoko with 15 pts on a 6-8 FG, 1-2 3pts, and looked very much an NBA player tonight

Pop has really taken a liking on this kid for his ability to pass, and focus to become better. If he can continue working on his shots, his athleticism and defensive upsides, he could be a real good project and possibly to make a very good role player on a contending team.

"He's gonna be a good part of our program for a long time" - Pop's last quote of the video.

This should have put an end to any interogations about his presence in the roster.

I don't see much diff between him and Sochan in the huge potential they both have but also huge limitations.

Both are long shots projects that have chances to fail or pay big depending on the evolution of their shooting skills.

And Keith Bogans was the defensive centerpiece of a roster that contained Duncan and Bowen. I’d take any effusive praise by Pop with a grain of salt.

Maybe you're right but I don't recall Pop talking about a 2nd rounder like that, he's been kinda insistent on praising him for a while now, at the surprise of most, me included.

Either he's just senile or he's seing something we don't

Keith Bogan was not 20 years old when he played for the Spurs. Nowadays players come in 18 years with full raw talent that teams think they can develop into NBA players. And the Spurs are one of the better teams in players development. I really think Pop likes Sidy’s at ude in getting better. Pop is a sucker for overachievers. Plus Sidy’s ability to pass and defensive upsides fit perfectly in Pop’s motion offense. IF the Spurs could work on Sidy’s shooting, they could really make a solid role player off him imo

Bogans was the replacement for Bowen, they were never on the roster together

This guy is an NBA player for sure. Just a question of if he can lock in some things (like a serviceable jumper) to be a super valuable role player or maybe something beyond that.

if you're going to be a perimeter player who cant really shoot, you have to basically go and find things to do on offense. screen/roll game, true connective skills (includes handling and vision, not just the ability to execute passes), timely movement and offensive rebounds, etc. its not easy, and is especially harder in today's space and pace game to thrive in that role.

sidy is still 20 and his contract next year has no guarantees until after summer league. the physical tools are obviously appealing but he has a ways to go. hope he can get there.

Bryn was bad at almost everything but he was always a plus shooter. theres a lot of guys in the league who are terrible defensively, terrible with the ball in their hands, but they can shoot. its a skill that will generally keep you around

I wonder what Pop is going to do with him to me he probably needs to be the main guy for our G League team and spend 60 to 70% playing 30 + minutes in that league with the remaining with the big team. He needs to be the focus on offense as I want him shooting mid range and 3 pointers and trying to creat his own shots. Castle won’t be spending any time in G League so coaches can focus mainly on him and would like to see Minix get some love to.

I've never said he's going to be great at all, but my point has been that I think he will get another contract for multiple reasons, including that the head coach seems to really like him. Also, I see no reason to actively root and cheer for his failure, especially since he likely won't be playing big minutes anyway.

Castle, Sochan, Sidy all have enough similarities in their profile that I see this as one of the archetypes the team is happy to prioritize.

On the other hand there's a role player from the 2010 roster that Pop said a nice comment about once who was later cut, so, you know, it might not look good for Sidy.

You are correct. I thought they overlapped one season, but they did not. Pop still made that statement with Duncan on the roster.

Sure. My point was just that when Pop likes someone, he gives him time

That was a different time, a time when we did not possess a boat load of draft picks. I still think that if Sidy doesn’t dominate the gleague in his 3rd season there, he has no future with the Spurs.

What do you think? He's going to get cut? One more chance/season?

Ex is the biggest Sidy hater on this board. It looks like he’ll keep this thread bookmarked to respond to any optimism about Sidy. There is no “different time” with the Spurs. The Spurs have largely been consistent in their principles about continuity. They give their players on rookie contracts another extension unless they’re utterly hopeless, which Sidy is not. It will have nothing to do with how many upcoming picks they have. They’ll consolidate those picks before they give up on development (or they will give away players they’re done developing, like Keldon, and make room for both Sidy and said picks). That’s what the Spurs have done for decades and will continue to do as long as Pop is alive.
