    A little update about Nunez:

Last summer he moved from Germany to Spain where he is now playing at a higher level (Spanish league and Euroleague) with Barcelona. He signed with them a generous 3 years contract with a gross yearly salary of about $1.6M (I guess dating the daughter of the GM help...).

He was barely playing at the start of the season but is playing more lately because former Spur Laprovittola tore his ACL. He will likely play less when/if Barcelona signs a replacement for Laprovittola.

From the little I've seen of him, from what people are saying and from his stats, he is really struggling. He sucks defensively, he can't shoot and isn't aggressive offensively. Right now, it's hard to view him as a future NBA player. It's not over because he is young and talented but he has a long way to go before Spurs should consider bringing him in.

The positive side is that with the draft and stash system, Spurs aren't spending resources to develop him. Maybe in 3 to 5 years, he will be worth being signed...

Wow, why did the Spurs draft him if he's that far away? Has he shown glimpses that he could become good sometime down the line.

The other thing is, wasn't he in the room for the second round of the draft? If I am remembering right and he was there, that seems more like a player that expected to come over a lot sooner.

The Spurs had a full roster, more or less, and are developing young guys already. Taking a player who needed a roster spot immediately would require moving someone and a cost they didn't want to bear.

Priority seems to be seeing where they can get with Champ/Bassey/Branham/Wesley/Cissoko before adding any more youth.

Ever hear of Manu Ginobili? Or Gordon Giricek? We drafted them both on a flyer in 99, and neither of them played in the NBA until they were 25.

I understand all that, what I am saying is, why would he make the trip to the US for the second round of the draft? Did he get a promise he'd be drafted? Seems like a waste of money to me to bring his family over.

Of course, but that was over 20 years ago when international players weren't scouted as much as they are now. The main thing I'm perplexed by is, why did he come to the US for the second round of the draft (I assume he lives in Europe) if he didn't know if he was going to be drafted? Was he made a promise by a team? Did he expect to be picked and play right away? These are pretty big presumptions by a guy who is projected to be 3-5 years away for a "maybe" he can play in the NBA.

Spurs didn't reach to draft Nunez only because he could be stashed. He was projected to be an early second round pick. Spurs did reach to stash players in the past with players like Mahinmi and Jean-Charles but Nunez isn't in that case.

Nunez is just a worst prospect than he was 4 months ago at the draft. He has been unable to translate what he did in Germany at a higher level with Barcelona.

OK. That makes sense. I didn't know his projections going into the draft. If he's joined a new team, and it isn't translating so far with what he did with his old team, then that makes sense that he's dropped a little bit as a prospect since the draft. Thanks for explaining that, Bruno.

I hope he can somehow turn himself into a Manu Ginobili level pick come 3-4 years for now, but the chances of that happening are much, much lower than when Manu was drafted. Can anyone tell me that followed Manu in the early days, did he start off well when he went to the bigger European team/s?

Bruno your take is aging like milk

The assist of the week and of the month has just been given by a player who is practically being born in the Euroleague.Juan Núñez today provided 7 assists and stole 4 balls.

Yeah, he sucked for two months and had his first good game of the season one day after I posted it. Hopefully he will keep playing well and convince Barcelona not to go after a high level PG to replace Laprovittola. If Nunez could keep getting around 20mpg in Euroleague, it will be great for his development.

You can watch Euroleague games on EPSN+. From what I've seen this will probably end up being Nunez' level.

Nunez is doing a little better and had his best game of the season yesterday against Panathinaikos with 19 points scored.

    Euroleague stats
    Spanish league stats

Barcelona has signed Raul Neto to replace Laprovittola but Nunez should still get a lot of playing time in the next few week because Neto and another guard (Brizuela) are injured.
