Why The Recent U.S. Aid Package To Ukraine Included 2,000 Humvees

On October 16, 2024, the U.S. State Department announced a military aid package valued at $425M to Ukraine, which includes the standard stock of ammunition and missiles. This package also provides approximately 2,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), commonly referred to as Humvees, durable light military trucks that have been a mainstay of U.S. ground forces since the 1980s. On social media, some critics questioned why the U.S. chose to send these aging vehicles. However, the inclusion of Humvees in the aid package makes logical sense given the current and future needs of Ukraine.

Ukraine requires a significant amount of equipment to sustain its defense that spreads across a 600-mile front, with Russia attacking along three primary axes. These defensive positions are under daily bombardment from Russian artillery, which seeks to create holes in the Ukrainian lines. Ukraine has lost a substantial number of vehicles, with Oryxspioenkop reporting over 220 vehicle losses in October alone and almost 2,000 since the start of the year. These numbers only include those vehicles that have been visually confirmed, so the actual losses are considerably higher. To avoid creating gaps in their lines, Ukraine needs military vehicles to replace their losses.

Now that's it's increasingly clear Ukraine is losing, you should fully expect Zelensky to step up his criticism of the U.S., Biden & "The West".

He doesn't take responsibility for any failures. It's always the fault of the "partners".

How does letting Ukraine stop Russia reverse what North Korea is "now" capable of? These propaganda guys are out of control.

If anything, more escalation will just bring Russia and North Korea even close together.

Listening to Zelensky has been listening to a loser too. He constantly overstates and overpromises and usually makes little sense.

Russia was practically begging for negotiations at the start of last year's counter-offensive. But when it failed, that was the end of negotiations on favorable terms for Ukraine. Now it's looking like negotiations on any terms.

The war doesn't end unless Russia loses. Russia is at war with NATO and western democratic order. Plus, if they switch back to peace time economy, their economy will collapse. There is only one way forward for Russia - continuing the war. If Ukraine falls, they will find a new target, probably Moldova, but maybe Baltics, this time with the added morale and propaganda boost of winning against NATO in Ukraine.. Putin's regime is now tied to war, the war is their lifeline, they will continue until they "win" (destroy "the west") or lose and fall.

Personally, i'd rather see they lose and as soon as possible. I like freedom, democracy and other western ideas.

Russia is not losing. Ukraine isn't capable of beating them. This is OBVIOUS.

They're in the "denial" stage right now. But I don't think we're too far from the "acceptance" stage. I don't like Russia, but we have to live in reality here.

Russia braces for more tax rises to fund the Ukraine war

Russia will need to raise taxes further to fund its war in Ukraine, according to economists who say revenue-raising measures already announced will not be enough to fund the country's ballooning military spending.

Russia's draft 2025 budget allocates about one-third of total expenditure, or 6.3% of GDP, to the military - the highest level since the Cold War. For the first time, the share of spending on defence will be double that of social spending.

The huge increase in military spending is generating inflationary heat in Russia's economy. Interest rates have risen to their highest since 2003 and the rouble has slid to a one-year low against the dollar. With Western sanctions effectively barring Moscow from the international bond markets its fundraising options are limited.
The government has already started raising taxes to fund its war in Ukraine, now in its third year. A major tax reform is expected to generate additional revenues worth 1.7% of GDP in 2025. Economists argue this will not be enough.

"The adjustment of domestic taxes will remain a constant focus for the authorities. It is possible that in 2025 we will see many initiatives to amend tax legislation and regulations," said Alexei Klimyuk from Alfa Wealth.

An expected fall in the price of oil, Russia's main export commodity, is also casting a shadow over the country's finances. The draft budget projects the price of oil will decrease on average from $70 per barrel in 2024 to $65.5 per barrel in 2027, denting state revenues.

This is reportedly what Finland experienced during the Winter War against the Soviet Union. They had to give up territory to end the war.
