On one end, Sexton got a call and free throws for barely a bump - those lame calls the current NBA excels at. Next play, Castle is taken out of the air and there's no call.

I can't believe they picked up Wesley and Branham's options tbh. Maybe 1 but both is ridiculous![]()
Another impressive win. I almost gave up half-way through the 3rd quarter. They couldn’t seem to sink a basket and even the FT’s were not going in. But what they’re missing on offense, they made it up on defense and finally that prevailed. They created opportunities with their aggressiveness. They crawled back and stumped the Jazz with their defense. That game was reminiscent of the old Spurs where they hang their hat on defense. By the end of the day, it’s the defense that would get them through especially at nights when the ring seems smaller.
Kudos to Bassey for continuing his defensive aggressiveness. I doubt the Spurs won without his great defense. CP3 again was the maestro down the stretch. His presence reminds me of the Big 3 when you know the ball is in the right hands. HB was a steady hand. At the time the Spurs are missing their 3 best scorers, you know HB will deliver but will graciously step back when they’re back. Castle’s demeanor again towards the end was superb. These learning on the ropes with the Pointgod has got to be the best ever to happen to Castle. He is learning personally from the best. It’s like having Ali showing you The Shuffle or Manning’s Play Action. And the kid is absorbing, and CP3 believing in him. Only great things would come from this great experience.
If any silver lining from the injuries is that the next players seem taking the most of it, from Castle, to Bassey, and even Coach Mitch, and that’s great. GSG!

Kinda funny that Barnes has never made an All Star team but by the time he hangs em up, he'll have won an NBA Championship, an Olympic Gold Medal, and have likely made over 250+ mil in his career. Not bad tbh.
Inevitable, huh. We have a cool win and some good things to talk about. People just rush in to post this instead. Third comment, too. Great job.
wonder if we'll see any Wemby/Bassey pairings in the future. i'd be interested just for the defensive potential of that pairing.
Aww, Mr. Meltdown.
I can't believe you still post here even after Kawhi left town. Why didn't you follow him to Toronto and Los Angeles instead of polluting this place with your pointless, repe ive takes?
Spending 7 years of your life actively rooting against your - supposed - favorite team is more ridiculous, TBH.
Sup fatso?
Why would I leave now? The Spurs have a new coach that's doing great and Sniff Crew stalwarts (Zollins and Branham) are getting outplayed by better players just like a big chunk of us have been calling for for YEARS....
We eatin' good, homie (Not as good as you though).
you've been posting here for 17 years and cant grasp the concept of criticizing bad decisions
saying you want the team to make smarter moves to help them win is somehow the same as actively rooting against the team?
He's a no-life troll with nothing better to do but regurgitate the same "takes" over and over again. Even when the team is winning games and being compe ive, thank goodness, he complains about end of the bench players and what 'that other coach at home' would be doing.
It's not a bad decision when they potentially have 7 open roster spots for next season. They need bodies to fill spots and want to give one or both guys an opportunity to maybe, maybe turn things around.
Not hard to understand, but maybe it is for numbskulls like you and Mugen.
Eh, it's not like it was game-changing looking at the bigger picture.
Easy enough to attach either one to match salaries or even dump them for a SRP, we need some third stringers, anyway.
Playing them too was the issue, but Mitch got over himself in no time and realized they're not NBA players and will never be.
The next big test for Mitch is Bassey situations. If he DNPs Collins when Wemby gets back, then we might have ourselves a coach.
Mitch is gonna continue to give both guys opportunities. They both are on the cusp of falling out of the league, but it still in the best interest of Mitch and the Spurs to continue to see if either can 'turn the corner.'
I completely agree with everything else stated, though.
They should get minutes only when we have a lot of players sitting and during blowouts.
Branham's leash should be short, he should sit every time he doesn't make his first couple of shots because he's a huge negative in every other aspect of the game.
As for Wesley, there's just no place for him if CP3, Castle and Tre are all playing.
It's their third year and we're seeing very little. Then you look at Bassey who had two major knee injuries, didn't even play other than garbage time but he made huge impact right away. They both are on the cusp of falling out of the league, but it still in the best interest of Mitch and the Spurs to continue to see if either can 'turn the corner.'
It's in Spurs' best interest to develop Wemby, Castle, Jeremy and Devin. Others need to fight for their minutes because it's not hard to replace the likes of Branham and Wesley, even with minimum contracts.
Champagnie was behind Branham when we got him and he's a way better player right now.
We're talking about the toughest league in sports with only ~300 players getting real minutes, there's no place for charity cases if we're to compete.
As I said, they should be thrid stringers who need to take advantage of every opportunity they get. We lost enough games because of them not being good enough.
Anyway, one silver lining to Wembanyama being out is it's forcing the coaching staff to rely on Bassey and Collins more.
I know he's having a solid season thus far, but Collins game (on offense at least) overlaps with too much of what Wemby likes to do.
We really don't need a perimeter shooting big man that isn't strong on the boards or can be pushed around inside. I just like Bassey's style of play as a change of pace, junkyard dog-type that brings things Wemby lacks (above average rebounding and interior strength).
I'm hoping they figure out a way to keep Bassey in the rotation once Wemby is healthy. And that Collins can continue his strong play so we can flip him for a better fitting asset or more draft capital.
I agree with you, brother, I meant more so in trying to 'recoup' the value of their drafted spot.
Obviously, now that the team seems to be turning a corner they are more likely to be left behind. I just think there draft positioning (or the history of how the Spurs value 1st round picks) and the uncertainty of Tre & CP3's futures make it necessary to still try to develop both.
It isn't an easy task and their best shot for time is now (in the early part of the season) because post All-Star break they'll both be glued to the bench (barring injuries).
Just consider it a counter to your constant fellating of PATFO tbh
Balance.
we had to pay a 2nd rounder to dump like 2.5 mil of guaranteed salary for devonte graham. i dont think you can just easily walk away from 4.5-5 mil apiece for Branham/Wesley given what we've seen from them.
i could have bought just picking up Wesley's option. his game has shown some semblance of growth since his rookie year, and both Paul and Tre are on expiring deals. picking up branham's option is really perplexing to me. lets imagine his option wasnt picked up and he was going to be a UFA this summer. how much better does he have to play compared to what we are seeing now for somebody to give him a contract paying him 5 mil per year?
Also the only reason Branham isn't eating heavily into Steph's minutes is that Mitch is coaching tbh.
I brought it up in this thread because the dynamic duo managed to go 1/8 this game with some terrible defense. I also was annoyed that Branham got in Bassey's face on defense after he was the one who f'd up![]()
I'm not slitting my wrists over it but that stuff matters in the long term, especially when this team starts being compe ive.
Good win though![]()
I guess their logic was that we won't have cap issues the next summer.
Wesley is obviously a rare point of attack defender point guard archetype...except that he's got barely any actual point guard skills. His archetype is more sought after than Branham's, but I don't think Wesley will ever put it together.
Branham won't ever be anything more than a bench chucker, but I guess theyr'e hoping he could actually become good at it. Not looking good so far.
At least Blake was being a great cheerleader last night. Good for him for bringing the vibes tbh.
Just wanted to jump on this comment, because I think it's pertinent to some choices the Spurs face going forward. I don't think we need to worry about "recouping" the value of their drafted spot because, tbh, even though Bran and Blake suck, they've delivered about on par with expectations of their drafted spot. Yes, you can look at any draft and find guys taken in the 20s who are valuable contributors in the league, but you can also find plenty of guys who are about what Bran and Blake are. This is a good reminder not to overvalue FRPs. And in that vein, we shouldn't get too attached to them if we have an opportunity to send away a middling FRP for someone like Derrick White, if the opportunity arises.
the issue with both Branham and Wesley is that they are in their 3rd year. This is usually where you see your prospects make huge leaps, kinda like Jeremy did this season. Yet, both are still the same players. If their contracts were be expiring, we could've just resigned them for the minimum, cause no one in the league would offer them more. With our warchest of 2nd rounders they should be easy to offload though, so no big deal to me.
