I think kids don't know and need some life experience before they are forced to start deciding their assigned restroom - if not necessarily their gender - isn't appropriate for them. That's my baseline and I think trans children of young ages, like say kindergarten, are a product of their parents' whims and not their own designs. As for college level adults, obviously that's going way too far and the law is foolishness because of it. It's pandering to the transphobic base but there is a hard reality here, at least if my wife is any confirmation: the idea of bearded-men in dresses using the same bathroom as bio women is an uncomfortable thought for most of them (those assigned female at birth). anecdotal, perhaps, it does seem like a red line democrats seem overwilling to cross, in my personal opinion.
