As it currently sits, Spurs are 3rd place in Group B.

In order to win our group, OKC needs to defeat the Lakers on Friday, and we need to beat the Suns next Tuesday. If one of these fails to occur, we will not win our group.

The route for the Wildcard is virtually the same, the Lakers need to lose a game, and we need to beat the suns. The Mavs also need to lose against the Grizzlies.

    OKC beats LAL.

Spurs have an opportunity to win the group with a win @ PHX on Tuesday. Is this the biggest game of Wemby's (or pretty much anyone other than CP3 or Barnes) career to date?

It's the biggest NBA game of their careers, but Wemby has an Olympic and international finals games and Castle has a college national championship game. But yeah, this is an opportunity for a club that may not get another high-pressure game in for a while to show what they can do. Hopefully they're reasonably healthy.

OKC has a +18 now and they're tied with us. And their only remaining cup game is the Jazz. Does it come down to us beating them H2H? I thought point differential decided ties.

Thanks - yep, meant their professional careers.

Hopefully Sochan can play Sunday and shake off a little rust, and likewise hopefully Vassell can shake off some rust and give Mitch an opportunity to better see how these guys might fit coming off the bench (for now).

The first tiebreaker is H2H. Because of this, if the Spurs lose to the Suns they'll effectively be eliminated unless a few things happen. Say the Spurs lose by 1, then 1) The Blazers lose to the Clippers (very possible) by 13 or less and 2) the Mavericks lose to the Grizzlies by more than 28

So... win and we are in. Lose and we are 98% out.

I didn’t realize that there is only 1 wild card per conference… so if we lose and either the Mavs, Blazers or OKC wins, then we are 100% eliminated.

Grading on a curve, sure. Winning the NBA cup is like winning the Skills compe ion.

The LAL went into an tailspin after winning the cup last year, and nearly didn’t make the playoffs.

Yeah, gotta agree with this. The Cup is cool, but in the big picture I'd bet most players would value an NCAA championship over it.

    There's nothing to learn.
6 groups, 5 teams per group, everyone plays each other once.
6 group winners and two best second place teams qualify for quarter-finals.
H2h determines who's ahead if both teams have the same W/L.
Points differential determines which two second placed teams are the best.

Then it's just your regular win or go home tournament.

Fans may be indifferent to the Cup, but players aren't. They're compe ors who like to win. This group being in a "do or die game" for the first time in their professional careers is a good thing.

Is there a larger sample to be had? I covered 100% of the cups that have been played so far.

The cup is a garbage attempt to make Oct-Feb interesting.

Yes, you'll often see scientists say "this sample size isn't statistically significant, but it's the only one we have, so we base all further conclusions off of it"

I didn’t draw any conclusions other than LA put too much effort into it with an old core, and almost missed the playoffs. That’s not really up for debate, is it? They went 3-10 after hoisting their tin cup.

The same thing is happening to the Lakers now. That‘s not due to the cup, it’s because they easy to figure out

Get out of here with that, if any other team besides LA won it last season you wouldn’t be saying this. You can convince yourself that you would but no, you would not.

If another team other than LA won, I would not, in fact, say that winning the cup was a bad thing for LA, because they wouldn’t have won. You’re a genius!

Too bad we can't figure the Lakers out. BTW, why does Russell play like an all-star against us, but like a waste of space against most everyone else?

Knect looks like he is going to be a good player, at least offensively. He is still finding his way on defense.
