yeah made no sense. it took over a year for them to find their footing with the Gobert/Towns frontcourt, it served them very well and they made the conference finals... and they immediately decided to trade away KAT for Randle who is just an abysmal fit alongside either of Edwards or Gobert (luckily, Edwards has leveled up again from 3 point range which helps).
everyone knew they were going to run up against cap issues later, but then just a few weeks after trading away KAT, they gave a 32 year old Rudy Gobert a 3 year 110 mil extension through his age 35 season. he has also predictably looked a lot worse playing with randle instead of towns
now theyre still in a cap spot, but with a worse long term outlook. Naz Reid will presumably opt out of his 15 mil next year. and then even if Randle opts out of his 31 mil, they can open up a max of 9 mil in cap space. they'd be better off operating above the cap anyway and having the MLE. NAW will also be a free agent... they botched it.
