The Maui and Alaska tournaments were popular, because any games not played in the contiguous 48 states didn’t count against the NCAA regular season game limit. That’s the only reason these exist.
I forgot about that as while like I said I don't watch college ball anymore use to long time ago

    Thanks

I don't really have much about the Emirates Cup one way or another, as I am still viewing it as a regular season game. I have two issues:
    1) I am not sure how the pools were constructed, and I really should look into it, but then I just don't care that much;
    2) The courts just give me epilepsy.

If it helps the players bring out their compe ive juices all the better, but I am not really seeing that. I thought the league was putting that in so that the fans would actually watch the games early in the season.

I hope they would move the game to later in the year, but then there is the all-star game. if the Cups straddles mid December to early January, I think it would be a bit better. The first wave of starting the season is starting to wane, the teams have a few weeks to tie down their defensive and offensive sets, and everyone is more in tuned to what the game is going.

That said, if someone can point me to the format how the Cup is set up, and how winners are determined, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

It's really pretty straight forward. Each conference has 3 groups, with randomly assigned teams. The group winners (6) and one wild card per conference (2) advance to the knock-out rounds where it is just an 8-team single elimination tournament.

If the prize were something other than money, I think I could get more excited by it. In this era of hugely punitive aprons, an extra draft pick at the end of the first round would be a big incentive, and it would make sense for teams to battle for that.

I don't think the current players would be excited about one of them potentially getting replaced. I wouldn't play harder knowing I'm helping the franchise with possibly drafting a younger player better than me lol

I had to look up the group assignment procedure. It isn't totally random, instead each group has one team from each of the 1-3/4-6/7-9/10-12/13-15 place groups from the prior season.

    https://www.sportskeeda.com/basketba...s-nba-cup-work

It starts by dividing teams into six groups - three groups of five teams per conference. The group assignment process is systematic: teams are distributed based on their previous season's record. The top three teams from each conference are randomly assigned to the three conference groups first, followed by the next three teams, and so on until all teams are placed.
I thought there was some rule to limit how many teams in a group come from the same division, but as far as I can tell no such restriction exists. Last year's West B group and this year's East B group have 3 teams from the same division.

Also, it appears to be possible for a group to not have any teams from a single division but that hasn't happened yet either. All 12 NBA Cup groups (6 last year, 6 this year) have either had a 2-2-1 or 3-1-1 division breakdown.

So the one game elimination format is based on group play results, which would mess up the regular season schedule wouldn’t it? I thought teams plays cross conference teams twice a year and in conference teams about 4 times a year. So if a team plays another team in the cup elimination rounds it will require reshuffling of the schedule later on will it?

yes, the schedule has some flexibility built in and it will ultimately be changed slightly for the teams who are in teh final 8. Then the Vegas games don't count towards the regular season.

The knockout games within conference become rescheduled regular season games, but the Championship Game versus the other conference does not count towards the regular season.

Interestingly, I'm not sure how it would work if somehow the Spurs and Jazz (for example) made the knockout rounds (for example) since they've already played all of their regular season matchups and there are no more to be rescheduled into the knockout rounds.

I think the NBA plans a big general rescheduling, since if you look at the Spurs calendar they are currently scheduled to be off from the Dec 8 game versus NOP until the Dec 19 game versus ATL. Surely the NBA isn't planning on giving the Spurs a random 11 days off in December?

I just checked, and the whole league is like this. There is a NKY @ TOR game on Dec 9, and then there are TBD knockout games on 12/10, 12/11, 12/14 and 12/17 (the championship game). Then the schedule resumes for the entire league on 12/19. I'm *guessing* that the league is going to reshuffle the entire schedule once they figure out who is in the NBA cup... maybe? Last year the knockout stage was 12/5-12/9 and the Spurs still played on 12/6 and 12/8

    > Why are there two games labeled as “TBD” on each team’s 2024-25 regular-season schedule?
Every team will play two regular-season games (including the Emirates NBA Cup Quarterfinals and Semifinals for qualifying teams) from Dec. 10-16. The 22 teams that do not qualify for the Knockout Rounds will play two regular-season games on off nights during the Knockout Rounds (Dec. 12 or 13 and Dec. 15 or 16). The four teams that lose in the Quarterfinals will play a regular-season game on Dec. 12, 13, 15 or 16.

Being a season ticket holder last year, there were two unscheduled games that were filled once we were eliminated from going to Vegas. Interestingly, one of the replacement games was a third game against an EC foe.

The stats from Vegas count towards regular season stats, except for the le game, which is the 83rd scheduled game for those two teams. The Vegas eliminated teams have two games in Vegas, and the non Vegas teams have two additional games added to their schedule, bringing the total for both groups to 82 games.

Do you know which games there are - because there aren't any TBD game's listed on the Spurs schedule on their official website, nor NBA.com, nor BBall-Reference, etc. NBA really has their together

IIRC, last year we played the Timberwolves and the game was moved from later in the season to the night between the knockout games and the Vegas games. I assume thats what will happen this year. Once we know who doesn't make it they'll move a future game into that window but yeah I don't see anything that is TBD on the schedule. I got straight from the FAQ the NBA has which is LOL

It stilllllll hurts. Like 2013 bad. Hopefully they use their 2024 NBA Cup participation ribbon as motivation for something that actually matters. Like say making the playoffs.

On a side note it is being reported Keldon Johnson threw his ribbon in the Riverwalk last night when they touched down in San Antonio - Carmelo Anthony style.
