What I mean is if they came through illegally (crossed the border) and didn’t get caught, how do you know how many came in that way? This is why whenever you read about the count of illegal immigrants in this country you always get an approximate number, because getting an exact number is simply not possible.

The thing is, those “illegal” immigration numbers are for people that, for example, applied for asylum. That’s why and how you can count them. The actual numbers are probably higher. But I would also dispute that the administration has much to do with that, and that has much more to do with regional situations. Immigration law hasn’t been changed to be more lax. If anything, at some point it was made even more restrictive with asylum seekers.
However bad one thinks it has been recently, it really doesn't compare to the 1990s and 2000s. The Reagan amnesty was epochal.
