This is huge. It’s a shame that the Fox trade will forever be overshadowed and remembered as this move’s little brother.
Anyway,here we come!
Read his NBA opt-out is only for 2027

Spurs received $4.13M in cash in this trade.
This season teams are allowed to received up to $7.24M in cash during trades and Spurs have reached this limit.
They received:
- $1M from Indiana for the Furphy for Nunez swap.
- $110K from Charlotte when they dumped Devonte Graham to make the trade legal.
- $2M from Kings in the Jalen McDaniels salary dump trade.
- $4.13M in this trade.
Over the last 2 season combined, Spurs have received $14.29M in cash during trades and send $0.
I guess every dollar count...
Spurs Legend Patrick Baldwin. Looking forward to the tribute video.
Ugh, I don't like that precedent. Doesn't sound like the type of ownership that will stay in tax territory to maximize Wemby's career. I hope to be proven wrong and that they only hoarded cash like that because the team was terrible anyway.
Or exactly the kind of ownership that hoards cash / invests and uses this when they have to pay luxury tax in Wemby's prime?
The Furphy deal is the only one that bugs me, but only barely. The McDaniels and Baldwin deals are just good business. They didn't prevent us from doing anything else, we did a favor for another team, and in the case of McDaniels we actually got assets back (in the form of a SRP).
The Furphy trade is the only one that bugs me because we clearly didn't have much interest in picking a guy in the second round when there were some useful players available (Ajay Mitc and Jaylen Wells are the two that come to mind immediately). Maybe it's because the Spurs were still wanting to see what they had in Blake and Bran, but the reporting around the draft was that the Spurs were solely focused on guys who would take a two-way. Clearly there were some good players available (and Ajay himself is on a two-way), but the Spurs didn't think they were good enough and were more interested in getting cash (and they've done this multiple years now) and punting.
I'm really hopeful that was some combo of roster construction, wanting to see exactly what they had, and not loving anyone that was still available.
I really wanted Ajay and was super excited when Furphy fell, but from the FO perspective it really seems like they wanted to know what they had in Blake/Bran & Sidy (who Pop reportedly dreams about) + Champ w/Vassell, knowing they already had to develop Castle and likely knowing Paul was on the way w/Tre as his backup.
Add in Keldon & Sochan (both who Pop loves), and their simply weren't any minutes 1-3.
Plus, its clear they wanted more vet presence (Barnes) to help Wemby, so needed the roster spot hence the two-way talk and that vet got them a free asset. From that POV, I'd rather have that Sac swap then Furphy (but would've rather cut Sidy for Furphy).
yeah. Make that money when you can -- spend it when you have to.
Iirc, we were a tax team for the duration BIG 3s Chip window in the mid-late 2000s. We once again became a tax team during Nephew's window mid-late 2010s before he bolted. I don't see any reason to assume that we won't do the same for the Wemby/Fox window.
Honestly though there shouldn't be a pressing reason for us to be a tax team until Wemby's second extension, unless Castle breaks out into a max rookie extension player himself and/or our upcoming draft pick develops into a rookie-max worthy player.
It's nice to have this kind of cyclical plan to guide a franchise's decisions. The No-Limit teams have been historically bad decision makers. Look at the Knicks up until the new CBA and now, Adelsn.
That would be what you call a high quality problem.
We need a big man to help Wemby. We struggle on defense when Wemby is not on the floor. We have nobody to protect the rim imo.
If you’re a GM and you’re not maximizing every dollar your disposal, you’re not doing your job. This is $14 million (minus the salaries incurred) the ownership group can now spend in a future season that without these moves they wouldn’t have. It’s smart business.
Spurs will be a tax team when they compete but given the new CBA won’t be stupid about it as it seriously has repercussions now beyond just money.
Welp, guess we're tanking for Flagg after all.
Because we didn’t keep peanut butter and jelly?
He was the future.![]()
Did you just troll him hard without him realizing he was walking right into it! WOW
At the risk of toxic positivity, I think you might be missing the fact that we actually have a lot of somebodys that don't protect the rim.
