the notion that crossing a border is as big of a deal as plotting 9/11 or bombing the USS Cole is bonkers
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/11/w...bay-trump.htmlOver the last week, the United States government has sent more than 80 men to Guantánamo Bay as part of a larger plan by the Trump administration to hold as many as 30,000 migrants at the Naval base. So far, all the detainees are believed to be Venezuelans. Some are being held in a prison building on the base, while others are detained at the Migrant Operations Center, a dormitory-style facility. (Mr. Castillo is being held at the migrant center, according to D.H.S.)
U.S. troops are building a tent camp at the site in an effort to vastly expand its capacity to hold detained migrants.
The Pentagon has described the first few Guantánamo arrivals as “high-threat illegal aliens” and their detention at the base as “a temporary measure.” But the administration has not released any details proving the men have criminal records or described how officials determined they were a threat.
https://www.npr.org/2025/02/12/nx-s1...migrants-trumpGelernt, deputy director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project, noted that suspected foreign terrorists who have been imprisoned for years at Guantánamo have access to lawyers, meaning that "these immigrant detainees are now being held in a situation with less rights than even the alleged enemy combatants."
sinister scapegoating and McCarthyite smears, this is an old playbook
In a statement to NPR, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said there is "a system for phone utilization to reach lawyers" but provided no additional detail. The government has not released the iden ies of the migrants sent to Guantánamo, and several of their family members say they have made repeated calls to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to inquire about their relatives, to no avail.
McLaughlin's statement also said: "If the AMERICAN Civil Liberties Union cares more about highly dangerous criminal aliens including murderers & vicious gang members than they do about American citizens -- they should change their name."
Not the old McCarthy card, Winester?
