Way better than the from previous years. At least you get a couple of possessions that actually matter.

nah, with how lackadaisical the all star games have become, doing short bursts keeps the players (and fans) reasonably engaged. give the players a full 48 minute game and it becomes a layup contest with one team winning by 45

Just shoot one FT, make it worth 2 or 3, depending of what type of shooting foul it was. Without free throws, defenses can just foul in eternum.
